Former Frostburg Football Coach Ed Sweeney Passes Away

FROSTBURG, Md. – Former Frostburg State head football coach Ed Sweeney, who coached the Bobcats from 1996-99, passed away Saturday, Jan. 28.
 
Sweeney was the program's ninth head coach and he guided the Bobcats to great success over his four seasons at the helm.
 
Sweeney led Frostburg to 30 overall wins (30-11) and he currently holds the school record for winning percentage for a Bobcat football coach (.732).
 
In his first season in 1996, Sweeney led Frostburg to its fifth nine-win season (9-2) and the Bobcats captured an ECAC Bowl Game trophy with a 24-21 win over Wilkes.
 
He led Frostburg to six wins in 1997, seven wins in 1998 and he capped his coaching career at FSU by posting an 8-3 record and guiding the team to the Atlantic Central Football Conference (ACFC) Championship trophy and another ECAC Bowl Game.
 
Among his many accomplishments, Sweeney posted a perfect 4-0 record against in-state rival Salisbury and he helped Ron Wallace to a pair of All-American awards following the '96 season.
