MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The D3football.com 2017 All-East Region teams were announced late on Tuesday night and five Frostburg players were named to the three teams while Bobcat senior Niles Scott took home Defensive Player of the Year honors.
Scott took home the region's top defensive award and was named to the first team defense after recording 16.5 tackles for loss, including 10 sacks while finishing third on the team with 51 total tackles.
Scott, a D3football.com Preseason All-American Second Team honoree, recovered a fumble against Wittenberg in the first round of the NCAA Playoffs, blocked a field goal against Christopher Newport and finished second in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) in sacks and fourth in TFLs.
Scott is the program's first All-Region Defensive Player of the Year award winner since D3football.com starting releasing its all-region teams following the 2005 season.
Scott was joined on the first team by senior left guard Christian Walsh. Walsh started all 13 games for the Bobcats this season and he capped his Frostburg career with 43 starts along the offensive line.
Walsh blocked for an offense that averaged 181.0 yards per game on the ground and a passing game that averaged 237.4 yards per game. Frostburg finished eighth in the nation in time of possession (33:57) and led the NJAC in scoring (36.0).
Senior left tackle Jake Townsend and junior tight end Christian DiPaola were selected to the second team offense.
Townsend was a mainstay at left tackle for Frostburg starting 41 career games and starting all 13 games this fall. A three-time All-NJAC selection, Townsend helped Frostburg rank 10
th in the nation in first downs (276) and second in the NJAC in total offense (418.4).
DiPaola emerged as one of the nation's top tight ends as he finished the season with 37 receptions for 571 yards with seven touchdowns. He scored a touchdown in four-straight games early in the season and hauled in scoring receptions in the NCAA Playoffs against both Washington & Jefferson and Mount Union.
Junior quarterback Connor Cox rounded out the five selections as he was named to the third team offense. Cox completed nearly 60 percent of his passes for 2,649 yards and 29 touchdowns. He finished his season ranked 14
th in the country in touchdown passes and he set Frostburg's single-season and career TD records after tossing three against Mount Union last Saturday.
All five players were named to the First Team All-NJAC and they are eligible to be considered for D3football.com All-America honors, which will be announced the evening of Dec. 15, in D3football.com's pregame coverage for Stagg Bowl XLV.
Frostburg finished the season with a school record 11 wins (11-2) and advanced to the NCAA Playoff quarterfinals for the first time since the NCAA expanded the playoffs to 32 teams. The Bobcats broke the program record for points in a season (468) by nearly 100 points and also won two games in the playoffs for first time in program history and spent the entire season ranked inside the top-20 in both the D3football.com and AFCA weekly polls.
