ASHLAND, Va. – The Frostburg men's basketball team dropped a road contest at Randolph-Macon, 72-60, in the first round of the R–MC Coaches Tournament, Friday night.
Sophomore Daniel Alexander led the way for the Bobcats (4-6) with 15 points on 7-of-12 shooting. Junior Edwin Cole scored nine points, but pulled down 11 rebounds, while sophomore Lawrence Pettis, Jr. came off the bench to score 10.
The loss will now place Frostburg in the consolation game tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 pm against Rowan.
Meanwhile, Randolph-Macon (7-3) advances to face Hobart in the title game at 4:00 pm after it had three starters in double figures against FSU. Grayson Midulla led the Yellow Jackets with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Both teams made 24 baskets from the field and the Bobcats made one more three-pointer than the hosts. However, RMC was awarded 14 more free throws than Frostburg and finished 19-of-26 from the line. The Bobcats held a 40-35 edge in rebounding.
Alexander knocked down a pair of baskets in the opening minutes of action to give Frostburg the early lead. Senior Tyler Michael also connected on back-to-back jumpers at 12-:57 and again at 11:11 as Frostburg led by two, 10-8.
Senior Darren Campbell hit a three-pointer just before the midway point of the first half as Frostburg increased its lead to 13-8.
The hosts answered with a 19-3 run that gave them an 11-point lead, 27-16, with 3:22 showing. Michael closed the half with a jumper with 1:00 remaining that brought deficit to nine, 34-25.
The Yellow Jackets extended their lead to 18, 46-28, inside the first five minutes of the second half. Pettis, Jr. connected on two free throws at 12:13 that pulled Frostburg to within nine, 47-38.
Randolph-Macon pushed its lead to 21 points, 63-42, less than five minutes later and kept their advantage above 10 points for the remainder of the contest.
