NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Frostburg State women's basketball team was handed its first Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) loss to No. 2 Christopher Newport 88-32, Saturday afternoon.
The Bobcats drop to 4-3 overall and 1-1 in the CAC, while Christopher Newport improves to 6-0 and 2-0 in the league.
Frostburg State only shot 18.8 percent from the field (9-48), while CNU shot 36.1 percent (30-83). The Bobcats were outrebounded by 24 (62-38) and were outscored 42-6 with points in the paint.
Junior Megan Kelly led the Bobcats in scoring with six points, with senior Adjowa Pinkrah adding five points. Junior Amber Downey grabbed five rebounds and chipped in four points with three blocks off the bench.
Frostburg scored the first points of the game at 9:10 as sophomore Victoria Diggs hit a three-point attempt to take an early 3-0 lead. A three from sophomore Amanda Emory at 5:36 tied the game at eight, but Christopher Newport would take over from there.
Pinkrah connected on a three-point jumper at 8:18 in the second period to cut the Christopher Newport lead to eight (19-11). CNU ended the second period on a 19-7 run to take a 38-18 lead at intermission.
Christopher Newport's Bailey Dufrene scored six straight points to open up the second half increasing CNU's lead to 44-18.
In the second half, the Bobcats were only able to generate 14 points off nine made free-throws, connecting on two made baskets.
Christopher Newport was led by Anitra Thomas, who scored a game high 11 points and Micah Maloney who grabbed a game-high seven rebounds and chipped in 10 points.
The Bobcats are back in action Monday, as they travel to Wilson for a non-conference matchup at 7:00 p.m.
