NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Senior Darren Campbell drained a three to tie the game at 71 with 1.9 seconds remaining in regulation and the Frostburg State men's basketball team prevailed 83-81 in overtime on the road against 17
th-ranked Christopher Newport Saturday afternoon at the Freeman Center.
Campbell, who pumped in seven of his 10 points in the second half, took a pass from senior Jordan Johnson and created separation with a dribble to his right side before launching a high-arching three that forced overtime.
Frostburg (4-2, 2-0) went on to outscore Christopher Newport 12-10 in the overtime frame, shooting 57.1% (4-of-7) from the floor and 66.7% (4-of-6) from the foul line in the process.
The triumph for Frostburg is the first-ever in Newport News and snapped a 21-game home winning streak of conference games for the Captains. The comeback victory is also the Bobcats first against Christopher Newport (4-2, 1-1) since the 2010-11 season.
Senior Tyler Michael scored a game-high 24 points and recorded his fourth 20-point scoring effort of the season. Michael also grabbed five rebounds in 40 minutes of action.
Sophomore Daniel Alexander secured a double-double with 17 points, 13 rebounds, two assists, two blocks and one steal in 41 minutes. Johnson tacked on 10 points, three rebounds and three steals off the bench. Junior Edwin Cole nearly recorded a triple-double with nine points, 12 rebounds and eight blocks.
CNU held the edge on the glass, outrebounding the Bobcats 51-47. Frostburg forced 18 turnovers from the Captains and collected 21 points off turnovers. The Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) matchup featured 12 ties and eight lead changes.
Frostburg raced out to a 7-2 lead but the hosts responded and went up by 11 (32-21) with 5:18 remaining in the first half. A quick 8-0 spurt pulled Frostburg to within three (32-29) with 3:29 showing on the first half clock and the Bobcats went into the half trailing 38-36.
Both teams struggled to score to begin the second half, but a three from Alexander at 16:28 and layup from Cole at 15:49 put Frostburg up 44-41. A layup from Michael at 8:25 put the visitors up 60-55 and a six-point stretch from Alexander gave the Bobcats a 66-62 lead with 4:30 on the second half clock.
After a back-and-forth next couple of minutes, CNU took a one-point lead (69-68) with 1:27 left in regulation. A layup with 52 seconds left in regulation put CNU up 71-68 before Campbell sent the game into overtime.
Frostburg surged ahead just 22 seconds into overtime with a layup by Johnson and the Bobcats did not trail for the remainder of the game. The Bobcats salted the game away at the foul line and held on for the 83-81 final.
Four players reached double figures for the Captains, headed by Savonte Campbell, who racked up a team-high 21 points on 8-of-13 shooting. Aaron McFarland added 17 points while Brandon Emond finished with 14. CNU also received 12 points and 12 rebounds from Spencer Martin.
Frostburg continues its stretch of conference road games this Wednesday night against York (Pa.) at 8:00 p.m.
