HUNTINGDON, Pa. – The Frostburg State women's basketball team was defeated by Juniata 86-67 in a non-conference matchup, Monday night.
With the loss, the Bobcats fall to 3-2 overall, while Juniata improves to 5-0.
Juniata shot 47.4 percent (27-57) from the floor with Frostburg only shooting 35.5 percent (22-62), while they surrendered a 43-27 edge to Juniata in foul shots. The Bobcats were outrebounded by 22, as they only grabbed 32 rebounds to Juniata's 54.
The Bobcats had three players in double-figures as sophomore Victoria Diggs led the way in scoring with 14 points and four rebounds. Senior Sharyce Warren recorded 13 points and grabbed four rebounds and sophomore Sydney Stotler tallied 10 points and recorded a team-high six rebounds.
Morgan Instone, led Juniata recording a double-double with 24 points, 14 rebounds and three blocks, while Dani Atkinson poured in 22 points.
Frostburg State took a 12-10 lead in the first quarter as junior Megan Kelly hit a three-point shot at 3:45. With 18 seconds left in the quarter sophomore Victoria Yoder tacked on a layup to tie the game at 14. Juniata would lead 15-14 at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Diggs hit a three-pointer with 39 seconds left in the half to give the Bobcats a 37-34 lead, but Juniata's Rachael Anstine made a layup to cut the lead to one as Frostburg led 37-36 at intermission.
Both teams battled in the third as there were nine lead changes. The largest lead in the third for the Bobcats was three points as Diggs made a layup at 5:20 to give the Bobcats a 48-45 advantage, but Juniata's Veronica Cosmopolis hit a layup with five seconds remaining in the quarter giving Juniata a 60-58 lead.
Sophomore Amanda Emory hit a layup at 5:39 in the fourth quarter to cut the Juniata lead to five (67-62), but an Atkinson jumper at 4:43 extended the host lead to 10.
The Bobcats are back in action this Wednesday as they host Penn State-Harrisburg at 6:00 p.m. to open Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) play.
