FROSTBURG, Md. – Sophomore guard Victoria Diggs knocked down five three-pointers on her way to a game-high 24 points and the Bobcats picked up their first win of the season, 76-52, over Bethany in the Jim Crawley Tournament. It's the second-straight game to begin the season that Diggs broke 20 points and led the team in scoring.
Frostburg State shot 46.8 from the field while holding the Bison to 37.8 percent. The Bobcats turned the Bison over 29 times, leading to 31 points off turnovers and won the rebounding battle 36-31.
After Bethany jumped out to a 4-0 lead, junior Adjowa Pinkra responded with five-straight points in a 10-0 Frostburg run and the host would not trail again. Sophomore Sydney Stotler's jumper just seconds before the buzzer gave Frostburg a 16-12 lead going into the second quarter.
Bethany crept back within two by cutting the Frostburg lead to 20-18 before Victoria Diggs converted on a three-point play and connected on her first three-pointer of the season to push the Bobcat lead back up to eight. Diggs added another three later in the quarter, and the Bobcats led by seven at the half.
Frostburg's six-point spurt early in the third quarter pushed its lead to double-digits as sophomore Victoria Yoder, Stotler and Diggs all finished layups, forcing Bethany to call an early timeout in the third.
The Bobcats stretched their lead to as many as 20 points in the third, outscoring Bethany 30-21 in the period. Diggs capped the quarter with a deep three-pointer at the horn to give Frostburg a 16-point advantage going into the fourth quarter.
The Bobcats held Bethany to eight points in the fourth, and Senior Sharyce Warren poured in six points in the final ten minutes to finish with 16 points on 7-11 shooting from the floor. Warren also added four assists, three rebounds and a pair of steals.
Pinkrah and Stotler finished with seven points and two blocks each. Yoder finished with six and five rebounds. Sophomore Amanda Emory chipped in with six points off the bench and shot 3-4 from the free-throw stripe.
After shooting 4-29 from deep in the opener, Frostburg State shot 7-24 from three-point range and 11-15 from the free-throw line. The Bobcats dished out 23 assists on 29 made baskets. Junior Megan Kelly handed out a team-best five assists.
Eleven different Bobcats made their way into the scoring column, including first-years Marina Jones and Brittany Davis, who tallied their first points in a Frostburg uniform.
In other Friday night contest at the Jim Crawley Tournament, Rutgers-Camden defeated Pitt-Bradford 74-63.
Frostburg State advances to the Jim Crawley Tournament Championship game in Bobcat Arena against Rutgers-Camden with tip-off scheduled 3 p.m.
