Women’s Basketball Falls to Mount Aloysius in Season Opener

Diggs and Warren combine for 40 points in the loss

FROSTBURG, Md. – Sophomore guard Victoria Diggs led the Bobcats with a game-high 22 points for the Frostburg State women's basketball team in a 73-62 loss to Mount Aloysius in the season opener Wednesday evening at Bobcat Arena.
 
Senior guard Sharyce Warren had 18 points and was the only other Bobcat to reach double-figures in scoring. Junior guard Megan Kelly added seven points while sophomore Victoria Yoder had six points and a team-high 10 rebounds on the evening.
 
Frostburg (0-1) shot 33.8 percent on the game (24-of-71), was outrebounded 52-39 and surrendered a 26-10 edge in foul shots. The Bobcats were outscored 35-23 by the Mounties in the second and third quarter.
 
Mt. Aloysius (1-0) shot 46.4% from the floor in the second half and was led by Jessa Wright with 16 points.
 
Warren knocked down a pair of three-pointers at 6:07 and 5:30 to give the Bobcats a 9-8 lead in the first quarter. Both teams traded scores down the stretch in the opening frame and senior forward Adjowa Pinkrah put the Bobcats up three (18-15) with a layup at 1:08.
 
A Warren three-pointer at 3:47 in the second tied the score at 27 but the Mounties closed the first half with a 34-33 lead. Kelly converted a layup at 8:12 in the third to cut the lead to one (36-35) but the visitors countered with a 12-4 scoring run to take a 48-39 lead.
 
A pair of fourth quarter free throws from sophomore forward Sydney Stotler cut the Frostburg deficit to just six at 59-53. A Warren jumper at 4:19 cut the deficit to six again, but the visitors regained the edge and did not allow Frostburg to get any closer.

Frostburg returns to the court this weekend for the 15th Annual Jim Crawley Tournament this weekend at Bobcat Arena. The Bobcats will host Bethany on Friday, November 17 at 6:00 p.m.
