FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State volleyball team dropped a five-set thriller to Westminster, 3-2 on Saturday, in the quarterfinals of the 2017 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Women's Volleyball Championship.
With the loss, the Bobcats finish their season with an overall record of 16-12.
Frostburg trailed after the first set as Westminster won 25-17.
The Bobcats rebounded in the second set taking it 25-22. In the second set, Frostburg found itself down 9-2 early but battled back to take an 11-10 lead. The set was tied at 22, however the Bobcats earned three-straight points from kills by senior Zoe Harris and sophomore Biamba Tshitenge and an error by Westminster to win the set and tie the match 1-1.
Westminster took the third set 25-22, as Frostburg led 22-20, nevertheless Westminster managed four kills and one Bobcat error to score five straight and take set three.
In the fourth set, Frostburg trailed 23-18, but then managed an impressive seven-point run that included kills from sophomore Ashante Corey-Bey and senior Madelyn Torres and a service ace from sophomore Cori Smothers that gave the Bobcats a 25-23 win and forced a fifth and final set.
The Titans took an early 7-3 lead in the final set and did not look back as they closed the afternoon out with a 15-7 win.
Senior Naya Cheatem added a team-high 16 kills, as Corey-Bey had four blocks and notched 13 kills.
Torres finished the day with a match-high 34 assists, while Smothers led the Bobcats in digs with 25 and had one service ace.
Westminster's Lexie Yoho was responsible for 18 kills and nine blocks, while Kendell Dickson and Rachel Moore collected 29 and 26 digs respectively.
