Volleyball Drops Conference Match to Southern Virginia

FROSTBURG, Md. – Despite 44 kills from the offense, the Frostburg State volleyball team dropped a 3-1 match to Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) opponent Southern Virginia at Bobcat Arena Saturday afternoon.
 
Frostburg (13-8, 1-2) lost the match in set scores of 21-25, 26-28, 25-21 and 22-25.
 
The Bobcats hit .162 for the match with 17 errors and nine blocks. Sophomore Ashante Corey-Bey finished with a team-high 12 kills. Senior Naya Cheatem added nine kills and sophomore Biamba Tshitenge smacked eight kills.
 
Senior setter Madelyn Torres assisted on 24 of the Bobcats' 44 kills, while sophomore Katie Onyundo led the team with 13 digs. Sophomore Cori Smothers and senior Lindsey Scepura also registered double-digit digs with 12 each.
 
Cheatem had a pair of kills in the first set, but the Knights took control of the set by jumping out to an 18-11 lead. Frostburg responded with five of the next six points to make the score 19-16 in favor of the Knights. Tshitenge had a pair of kills in the Bobcat scoring rally.
 
Neither team was able to gain much of an edge in the second set, as both teams traded scoring runs for much of the set. A kill from Cheatem and freshman Gianna Carmona put the Bobcats ahead 4-3. Corey-Bey smacked two kills and Torres registered a service ace to give the Bobcats a 10-8 lead.  Trailing 19-15, Frostburg scored four-straight to tie the set at 19. SVU scored the last three points to take the 28-26 set victory.
 
Frostburg jumped out to a 14-7 lead in the third set and scored six of the final seven points to take the set 25-21. Tshitenge and Harris had two kills each in the final scoring run.
 
The Bobcats carried the momentum to the fourth and final set, opening up a 6-2 lead to start. A kill from senior Jessica Bugtong tied the set at 10 and Corey-Bey smacked a kill to tie things at 15. Frostburg had one final flurry of points to cut the deficit to just one (21-20) but the Knights claimed the victory with a 25-22 set win.
 
Frostburg continues CAC play on Friday, October 13 against Penn State Harrisburg at 5:00 p.m.
