Bobcat Women Lose In OT To W&J

FROSTBURG, Md. – Washington & Jefferson was awarded two penalty strokes in overtime and the Presidents converted the second attempt to defeat Frostburg 2-1, Wednesday afternoon.

The Bobcats (3-9) scored first in the opening half and held on to their lead as long as they could.
 
Junior Molly Pickard scored on Frostburg's second shot of the afternoon for a 1-0 lead as the first half clock was winding down.
 
Frostburg received a penalty corner with 2:39 to play in the half and junior Cara Morrell smacked the ball in play and found senior Ivy Meissner who then connected with Pickard for the goal.
 
Washington & Jefferson outshot the Bobcats 8-2 in the first stanza, but the hosts capitalized on their opportunities for the halftime lead.
 
The Presidents, winners of five straight, outshot Frostburg 15-1 in the second stanza and 7-0 in the overtime period.
 
Washington & Jefferson broke through with just under seven minutes to play in regulation, when Jenna Jaworksi redirected a shot from Alana Boyd off a penalty corner and into the net that tied things at one.
 
Following the W&J goal, Bobcat senior keeper Nicole Leighty saw a flurry of action in front of her as she notched six saves inside the two minutes, including two with no time remaining on a penalty corner from the visitors.
 
The beginning of extra time mirrored regulation as Leighty posted three saves inside the first five minutes of play. Her fourth save of OT came when W&J was awarded a penalty stroke at 75:25.
 
Moments later, senior Savannah Neubert kept the ball from going in the net off a shot from Rachel Buyan for a defensive save.
 
The contest came to a close at 77:56 when W&J was awarded another penalty stroke and Buyan buried the shot for the win.
 
W&J led Frostburg in shots (31-3) and penalty corners (19-6).
 
Leighty did her part to keep the Bobcats in the game as she made a career-high 21 saves. Neubert finished the game with two defensive saves as she stopped a shot from Buyan in the 59th minute as well.
 
The Bobcats return to CAC action on Sunday at No. 7 Salisbury at 12:00 pm.
