ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – Senior outside hitter Naya Cheatem smacked 27 kills to lead the Frostburg State volleyball team to a dramatic five-set win over St. Mary's (Md.), 3-2, Saturday afternoon in the 2017 regular season finale.
The Bobcats (16-11, 4-5) took the conference match over the Seahawks (3-23, 0-9) in set scores of 19-25, 26-24, 26-24, 22-25 and 17-15.
Cheatem posted a team-high 27 kills while hitting .250 for the match. Sophomore middle hitter Biamba Tshitenge hit .448 for the match with 14 kills, while senior outside hitter Zoe Harris also reached double-digits in kills with 11. Senior middle hitter Sabrina Roberts also had a solid effort offensively with a season-high nine kills.
Senior setter Madelyn Torres racked up a season-high 53 assists along with three service aces. Sophomore setter Katie Onyundo was second on the team with eight assists on the afternoon.
Defensively, senior libero Lindsey Scepura led the way with 34 digs. It is the third match of the season that Scepura has posted 30 or more digs.
Tshitenge finished the afternoon with five blocks, while Cheatem added four.
Frostburg responded in a big way after dropping the first set of the afternoon with two-straight set victories to take a 2-1 match lead. St. Mary's (Md.) answered back with a victory in the third set before the Bobcats eventually clinched the win in the fifth and final set.
The Bobcats will await an announcement for ECAC Tournament on Monday, Nov. 6. The tournament will take place on Nov. 8, 11-12.
