Field Hockey Endures Loss At No. 8 Christopher Newport

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Frostburg State field hockey team dropped a Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) game at No. 8 Christopher Newport, 8-0, Sunday afternoon.
 
The host Captains (13-1, 4-0) scored three goals in the first half and added five more in the second as they won their eighth-straight game. Carol Thompson led the way with two goals as seven different players scored for CNU.
 
Sophomore Sierra Smizer earned her first career start in net for the Bobcats (3-11, 0-3) and collected nine saves in over 48 minutes of action.
 
After CNU scored its three first-half goals, Smizer stepped up and saved six shots over the remainder of the opening half to keep things at 3-0 at intermission.
 
She opened the second half with another save and Bobcat senior Savannah Neubert collected a defensive save as both came inside the first three minutes of the stanza.
 
Smizer kicked away two more shots before senior Nicole Leighty came in for the final 21:46 and notched four saves.
 
Along with her defensive save early in the second half, Neubert also posted defensive saves in the 49th and 55th minutes.
 
Frostburg finished the game with six shots, while CNU attempted 39. Junior Holly Van Wie had a shot turned away in the first half, while senior Ivy Meissner had back-to-back shots saved in the 58th minute.
 
The Bobcats return on Tuesday when they host McDaniel at 6:00 pm.
