Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Bobcats Fall In 2OT Nail-Biter

SALISBURY, Md. – Sophomore Victoria Diggs dropped a game-high 32 points, but the Frostburg women's basketball team endured an 87-84 double overtime loss at Salisbury, Sunday afternoon.

The game, which was originally scheduled for Saturday and moved to Sunday because of snow on the eastern shore, provided plenty of excitement between the in-state rivals.

Frostburg (5-8, 3-3) trailed by as many as 16 points in the first quarter, but outscored the host Sea Gulls (8-5, 4-2) in each of the final three quarters of regulation.

FSU, which trailed 34-28 at halftime, tied the contest for just the second time with 3:28 to play in the fourth quarter. Freshman Amanda Emory hit a three-pointer from the top of the circle off a pass from senior Kirsten Rayner that evened the score at 61 all.

Forty-two seconds later, Diggs connected on two free throws for a 63-61 Bobcat advantage. SU tied the game at 2:31 before a Rayner layup at 2:07 gave Frostburg a 65-63 lead.

Salisbury sent the contest into the first overtime when Kaylyn French hit a layup with 21 seconds left.

Frostburg grabbed a pair of one-point leads in OT behind a three-pointer from Diggs at 4:32 and a layup at 2:48. Laura Rothfeld pushed the Gulls' lead to four, 74-70, with a three-pointer at 2:00.

FSU stepped up and forced a second extra frame when Emory hit a layup with 1:40 left and Rayner converted a driving layup with 46 seconds left to knot things at 74-74. The Bobcat defense also forced three missed baskets inside the final 20 seconds to keep the score at 74-74.

Frostburg led for much of the second overtime. Diggs hit a three-pointer at 4:20 for a 77-76 edge, Rayner made a layup for an 80-76 cushion at 3:27 and Diggs gave the visitors a five-point lead, 83-81, with just 1:48 to play.

Frostburg scored just one point from that point on while the Sea Gulls finished 6-of-8 at the foul line inside the final minute to help seal the win. A three-pointer for the Bobcats as time expired was off target setting the final at 87-84.

Behind her game-high 32, Diggs finished 10-of-23 from the field, including five three-pointers. She was nearly perfect from the foul line (7-of-8).

Diggs highlighted four Bobcats in double figures on the afternoon. Junior Sharyce Warren contributed 17, Rayner added a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Emory scored 12 points and had nine boards.

Rothfeld led the Sea Gulls with 26 points and 11 rebounds and French added 17 points and 12 boards. Paige Bryce scored 13.

Frostburg returns to action this Wednesday when it hosts York (Pa.) at 6:00 pm.
