FROSTBURG, Md. – Sophomore Victoria Diggs notched a team-high 14 points, but the Frostburg State women's basketball team was defeated by York (Pa.), 77-72, in Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) play Wednesday night at Bobcat Arena.
Frostburg (5-9, 3-4) had four players reach double-figures, but shot 26-of-67 (38.8%) on the night. York (Pa.) (10-4, 4-3) went 25-of-59 (42.4%) from the field.
In addition to Diggs' 14 points, senior Kirsten Rayner notched 13 points, freshman Amanda Emory tallied 12 points and junior Sharyce Warren added 11.
York (Pa.) was paced by Morgan Golec, who scored a game-high 19 points. Two other players reached double-figures in scoring for the Spartans.
Frostburg opened the game with three three-point field goals, as part of an early 9-2 run. Emory converted a three just 24 seconds in, followed by a three from senior Kache Fields and capped off with a three from junior Adjowa Pinkrah. The Bobcats finished 9-of-26 (34.6%) from beyond the arc.
Frostburg led by seven points four times in the first quarter of play. Following the early run, Rayner made a layup at the 4:05 mark to put the Bobcats up 20-13. Fields made a foul shot with 2:28 left in the first to make the score 22-15. Freshman Sydney Stotler closed the first quarter scoring with a layup to put the Bobcats in front 24-17.
Emory ended a 3:23 scoring drought for the Bobcats in the second quarter with a layup at the 6:37 mark. Diggs converted on a three with 4:12 remaining in the half to give the Bobcats a 29-25 lead.
Rayner closed out the first half with a layup and the Bobcats took a 33-30 lead into the locker room.
York (Pa.) outscored the Bobcats 47-39 in the second half. Warren scored five straight points to put the Bobcats in front, 38-37, with 6:53 left in the third quarter. A three-pointer by Kelly and a layup from Stotler helped Frostburg close the gap to two points, 52-50, at the end of the third quarter.
The Bobcats rallied from a double-digit deficit to take a one-point lead in the fourth quarter with a foul shot by Warren with 2:37 remaining. Stotler tied the game at 72 with a layup at the 1:24 mark, but York scored the final five points of the contest.
York (Pa.) held the edge on the glass, 46-34, but Frostburg had 19 assists compared to the Spartans' 18.
Frostburg returns to the court on Saturday, January 14 against Marymount (Va.) at 1:00 p.m.
