First Half Surge Lifts Women’s Basketball to Win Over St. Mary’s (Md.)

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State women's basketball team outscored St. Mary's (Md.) 34-17 in the first half en route to a 61-54 victory in Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) action Wednesday night at Bobcat Arena.
 
The victory improves the Bobcats record to 5-7 and 3-2 in conference play. Meanwhile, the Seahawks drop to 3-9 behind a 1-4 mark in CAC play.
 
Senior Kirsten Rayner notched a team-high 14 points on 6-of-16 shooting to go along with six rebounds and two steals. Sophomore Megan Kelly tallied 12 points on 4-of-8 shooting (4-of-6 from the three-point line) with three assists, three steals, one block and one rebound. Freshman Amanda Emory rounded out the double-figure scorers for FSU with 10 points, four rebounds, three blocks and one steal.  
 
Frostburg, winners of four of its past five games, shot 22-of-66 (33.3%) from the field, while the Seahawks went 21-of-57 (36.8%)
 
The Bobcats used a 15-0 run in the first and second quarters to take a 19-4 lead with 9:43 left in the first half. Rayner converted on a pair of layups and Kelly connected on two three-pointers during the six-minute span.
 
Junior Adjowa Pinkrah made a foul shot to give the Bobcats an 18-point lead, 26-8, with 6:13 left in the half.
 
Freshman Sydney Stotler scored the final four points of the half, making a layup at the 15-second mark and two free-throws with seven seconds remaining to give the Bobcats a 34-17 edge heading to the locker room.
 
St. Mary's would cut the Bobcat lead to four points (39-35) with 52 seconds left in the third quarter. Frostburg would respond with 18 fourth quarter points, extending its lead to double-figures two times in the final quarter of a back-and-forth second half.
 
The Bobcats held a 25-10 edge in bench points and grabbed 16 steals compared to the Seahawks 10.
 
Frostburg never trailed in the contest, outscoring St. Mary's (Md.) in the first, second and fourth quarters of play. Forward Nina Haller scored a game-high 21 points for the Seahawks.
 
Frostburg continues CAC play Saturday, January 7, against Salisbury at 1:00 p.m. The Bobcats return home on Wednesday, January 11, against York (Pa.) at 6:00 p.m.
