FROSTBURG, Md. – Junior guard Alexis Welch scored a career-high 18 points, leading the Frostburg State women's basketball team to a convincing 90-60 victory over Wesley in Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) play Saturday afternoon at Bobcat Arena.
Welch's 18 points were a game-high and came on 7-of-10 (70%) shooting, including a scorching 4-of-5 (80%) from three-point range. She added five steals, three assists and one rebound in 17 minutes of action.
Frostburg (8-11, 6-6) led the entire game and outscored Wesley (7-12, 3-9) in all four quarters. The Bobcats 90 points matched a season-high set back on December 5, 2016 against Penn State Altoona.
The win lifted the Bobcats ahead of Salisbury (9-10, 5-7) and into fifth place in the CAC standings.
Frostburg shot 33-of-66 (50%) from the floor, 9-of-19 (47.4%) from three-point range and 15-of-18 (83.3%) from the foul line. Wesley was limited to 23-of-64 (35.9%) from the field and 9-of-24 (37.5%) from behind the arc.
Welch was one of four Bobcat players who scored in double figures. Senior forward Kirsten Rayner scored 14 points, freshman forward Amanda Emory scored 11 and sophomore guard Victoria Diggs added 10 points.
Freshman Sydney Stotler helped Frostburg maintain the edge on the boards, grabbing a team-high eight rebounds. Junior Sharyce Warren dished out a game-high six assists while sophomore Megan Kelly had five on the day, all of them coming in the first half.
The Bobcats were balanced in their scoring output, with 11 players scoring at least two points. Frostburg racked up 49 bench points, 38 points in the paint and 24 points off turnovers. Overall, 12 players saw the floor for the Bobcats.
Frostburg started the game on a 9-2 scoring run, beginning with two foul shots from Rayner and capped with baskets by Diggs, Fields and Stotler.
Wesley climbed back into the game in the second quarter, cutting the Bobcat lead to one (17-16), before Frostburg took control with an 11-2 run. Monshea Newsome-Murray banked in a long three-pointer that beat the first half buzzer to make the score 41-29 FSU at the break.
Frostburg used a 13-0 scoring run in the third quarter to take a 58-33 lead with 2:36 remaining. The Bobcats also notched the final eight points of the quarter, and outscored the Wolverines 25-8 in the third quarter of play.
Junior Adjowa Pinkrah made a lay up with 8:12 remaining in the game to give the Bobcats a 31-point lead. Freshman Victoria Yoder made a layup and foul shot with 2:28 remaining to give the Bobcats an 86-58 edge.
Sophomore Jasmin Tirado-Viscalla scored six points and tallied two of her three assists in the final quarter.
Frostburg looks for its third-straight victory this Wednesday, February 1 on the road against Penn State Harrisburg. Tipoff is set for 6:00 p.m.
