FROSTBURG, Md. – After dropping the first set, the Frostburg State volleyball team rallied to win three consecutive sets to defeat Penn State Altoona, 3-1, in the Bobcats home opener, Wednesday evening.
FSU (3-3) got off to a slow start, dropping the first set to the Lions (0-5), 25-21. However, the Bobcats turned the momentum around and won the next three sets, 25-13, 25-21 and 25-22.
In her first home match as a Bobcat, junior Chelsea Parrinello totaled 13 kills, four block assists and one solo block while junior Naya Cheatem assisted her on offense tallying 15 kills. Junior Madelyn Torres and freshman Katie Onuyundo each had 19 assists while junior Lindsey Scepura and freshman Cori Smothers led the Bobcat defense with 21 and 20 digs, respectively.
Set one proved to be an evenly matched battle, with points being exchanged back-and-forth between the two teams. Neither team gained more than a two-point advantage until PSA scored six unanswered points to round out the first set, 25-21.
The Bobcats bounced back quickly in set two, taking charge from the start. The game tied at seven before the Bobcats scored six unanswered points to surge to a lead they would not relinquish. FSU ended the set with an eight point run and junior Zoe Harris sealed the game with a kill to make it, 25-13.
In set three, FSU once again jumped out to a quick start, leading the Lions, 7-1 to start the set. However, PSA fought back to tie the game 15-15. The rest of the set remained close, before the Bobcats scored the last three points to win it, 25-21.
Set four featured four ties, and neither team could gain more than a three-point advantage throughout the set. However, FSU held off the Lions and managed to win, 25-22, to win the match in four games.
The Bobcats will return the court Friday, September 9
th when they host both Waynesburg and Washington & Jefferson. The first match of the day is set to start at 5:00 pm.
