NEWARK, N.J. – Freshman Brooke Shehade scored the game-winning goal in double-overtime to lift the Frostburg State women's soccer team over Rutgers-Newark, 1-0, on the first day of the Scarlet Raider Classic, Saturday afternoon.
This marks Shehade's second game-winning goal of the season, the first was also in overtime against Washington & Jefferson earlier this week.
The goal came in the 101
st minute of the game, when sophomore Haley Dalphon lofted a ball from 45-yards out to the top-center of the box. Shehade held off the Rutgers-Newark defender and chipped a shot over the Scarlet Raiders goal keeper for the winning goal.
FSU (2-2) is now 2-0 in overtime victories; earlier this week they defeated W&J, 2-1, four minutes into overtime play.
The Bobcats outshot the Scarlet Raiders (1-3) 17-2, and held a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks. Senior Karen Belteton played all 101:18 minutes in goal for FSU and made four saves.
FSU had several scoring attempts throughout the game, including a shot from freshman Caroline Lowery that was blocked in the final minutes of the first half.
Shehade made back-to-back shots in the opening minute of the second half but both were denied by the Rutgers-Newark keeper. Another shot in the 83
rd minute of play by sophomore Danielle Ferris hit the crossbar, and the game remained tied, 0-0, at the end of regulation.
The Rutgers-Newark goalkeeper, Diana Carvalho made eight saves on the day.
The Bobcats will resume play on day two of the Scarlet-Raider Classic when they face Swarthmore tomorrow at 1:00 pm.
