WESTMINSTER, Md. – Despite a strong first half and 3-0 lead for most of the game, the Frostburg State field hockey team dropped a 4-3 decision to McDaniel in overtime, Saturday afternoon.
The Bobcats (0-1) put three goals on the board first; scoring once in the first half and twice in the second. However, McDaniel (1-1) clawed its way back into the match, scoring three goals in the second half to tie the game. Eventually, the Green Terror found the back of the cage in overtime to earn their first victory of the season.
Senior Jacquelyn Nava led the way for the Bobcats, scoring one goal and also posting one assist. She was joined by teammate Molly Pickard (sophomore) who also notched a goal for FSU and freshman Meghan Hughes who scored her first collegiate goal.
FSU found the back of the cage first, when Nava scored, unassisted, in the 23
rd minute of play to give the Bobcats a 1-0 advantage going into halftime.
Pickard opened the second half with another goal for the Bobcats in the 40
th minute of the game after assists from sophomores Cara Morrell and Lindsay Gardiner. Minutes later, Hughes capitalized on a pass from Nava to find the back of the cage and give the Bobcats a 3-0 advantage with 44:07 on the clock.
However, the Green Terror's Gabrielle Yore found the back of the cage in the 47
th minute to put McDaniel on the board for the first time. Five minutes later, McDaniel's Mary Guest scored unassisted as the Green Terror started to close in on the Bobcats.
Yore scored again in the 67
th minute of play to tie the game, 3-3, and send the match into overtime. The Green Terror's Sarah Bach was able to put one past the FSU defense with 75:56 on the clock to lift McDaniel over the Bobcats, 4-3, in an overtime victory.
In goal, senior Jackie Gover made three saves for the Bobcats, while McDaniel's keeper Christina Gooding also had three saves.
The Bobcats will be back in action next weekend when they host the FSU Tournament September, 10-11. FSU will face Randolph-Macon in the first game of play, with a start time set at 12:00 pm.
