Bridgewater Sneaks Past Frostburg

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State field hockey team suffered a 2-0 defeat to Bridgewater, Saturday at Bobcat Stadium.

The loss drops the Bobcats to 5-3 overall on the season and ends a four-game winning streak. Frostburg entered the contest with the Eagles (4-3) having outscored its last four opponents 24-1.

However, on Saturday, Bridgewater's defense limited FSU to five shots.

On the other end, the Frostburg defense allowed just eight shots and senior keeper Jacqueline Gover notched five saves in the cage, including a sliding save in the 23rd minute while moving to her right.

Emily Matisons scored the only goal of the opening half for Bridgewater with 1:02 remaining in the first. Casey Gaffner took advantage of a Bobcat turnover and found Matisons who knocked a shot into the left side of the net.

Gover made another save just 36 seconds into the second half, but Bridgewater increased its lead to 2-0 just shy of 10 minutes into the stanza. Matisons knocked a pass towards the right post where Shannon Strosser tipped in the pass for a 2-0 advantage.

Ali Bishop played a majority of the time in net for the Eagles and she finished with two saves. Alexis Thomasson played just over 20 minutes in the cage and also notched two saves.

One of Frostburg's best chances of the afternoon came in the closing minutes when sophomore Holly Van Wie blasted a shot at Thomasson from the right side of the goal that was kicked away. Van Wie had two of Frostburg's five shots.

The Bobcats are back in action on Wednesday when they host Dickinson at 4:00 pm.
