SELINSGROVE, Pa. – On the final day of the River Hawks Classic, the Frostburg State volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision to Nazareth College and 3-0 to SUNY Geneseo in the last game of the tournament.
Despite winning the first set, 25-22, against the Golden Flyers (8-3), the Bobcats (5-8) dropped three consecutive sets, 25-19, 25-22, and 25-21. FSU held the advantage in aces, 7-6 and digs, 81-78, while Nazareth totaled more kills, 58-35, and assists, 53-33.
Junior Zoe Harris secured 14 kills while freshman Biamba Tshitenge notched four block assists. The duo of junior Madelyn Torres and freshman Katie Onuyundo tallied 18 and 14 assists, respectively. Junior Lindsey Scepura led the FSU defense with 20 kills.
In set one, FSU dominated throughout, holding a steady lead to start the set and used a four-point rally to take a 14-9 advantage. Nazareth came back to tie the set, 16-16, and points were exchanged back-and-forth until Frostburg outscored the Golden Flyers, 5-1, in the final points of the set to win, 25-22.
Frostburg used its momentum from set one to jump out to an early lead in the second set, going up, 4-2, before Nazareth tied it at five, and scored four unanswered points to gain the lead. A kill from Tshitenge and junior Chelsea Parrinello brought the Bobcats within striking distance of the Golden Flyers, but it wasn't enough as Nazareth scored the final three points to take the set.
Set three featured back-to-back points exchanged between the two teams, with the score tied, 20-20, late in the set. However, the Golden Flyers scored the final six points to win the set, 25-22.
In the final set, the two teams battled for points, tying the set seven times throughout. However, Nazareth managed to edge the Bobcats in the final points of the set to win, 25-21.
In the final game of the tournament, FSU could not outlast the SUNY Geneseo Knights, and fell, 25-22, 25-15 and 25-13 in three sets.
Harris led the offense in kills (5), while Torres tallied 12 assists and the defense of duo of Smothers and Scepura totaled 18 and 16 digs, respectively.
The Bobcats held the lead, 12-8, to start set one. However, SUNY Geneseo used a six-point rally to surpass the Bobcats and take control of the lead. FSU did not give up, and tied the game, 22-22, down the stretch, however it wasn't enough as the Knights tallied the last three points to win, 25-22.
FSU held strong to start the second set, tying the set, 4-4. The Bobcats were able to stay within two or three points of the Knights throughout much of the set before SUNY Geneseo scored eight unanswered points to gain a significant advantage. FSU tried to chase down the lead; however, the Knights earned the 25-15 victory in set two.
The Knights used a six-point rally and two four-point rallies to surge ahead of the Bobcats in set three. Kills from Torres and Harris and an attack error from the Knights brought the Bobcats within four; however it wasn't enough to overcome SUNY Geneseo as they took the third set, 25-13.
FSU will return to action Tuesday, September 20 for a match against La Roche. The game is set to start at 6:00 pm.
