FROSTBURG, Md. – Junior Naya Cheatem earned her 1,000
th career kill as the Frostburg State volleyball team defeated Chatham, 3-0, Tuesday night at Bobcat Arena.
Cheatem totaled 11 kills against the Cougars to reach a career milestone, 1000 kills. She also tallied four block assists while freshman Biamba Tshitenge notched two block assists and two solo blocks.
Junior Madelyn Torres finished the night with 21 assists while classmate Lindsey Scepura and freshman Cori Smothers each had 16 digs.
FSU (5-4) dominated in all three sets winning, 25-12, 25-14 and 25-22, over the Chatham Cougars (0-9).
In set one, FSU used a five-point rally early on to go up 8-2 over the Cougars. The Bobcats remained in the lead for the entire set, going up by as much as 15 points, 23-8, and scoring the final two points of the set to win it, 25-12.
The Cougars tried to come back in set two, earning their only lead of the set, 6-5, early on before FSU got things going on offense and scored four unanswered points to take the lead. Chatham used a kill by Belen Brown and an ace from Justyne Lasher to tie the game, 9-9. However, the Bobcats used an eight-point rally to gain an advantage they would not relinquish. A kill from freshman Ashante Corey-Bey gave FSU its final point of the set to win, 25-14.
The third set featured four ties as the Cougars tried to take one set from the Bobcats; however, FSU used five kills late in the set to seal the 25-22 victory.
The Bobcats will return to action this weekend when they travel to Susquehanna for the Susquehanna Tournament September 16-17. They will face Geneva in game one at 7:00 pm.
