PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Frostburg men's soccer team suffered a 1-0 loss at Carnegie Mellon in overtime, Saturday evening.
The Bobcats and Tartans battled to a scoreless tie for over 99 minutes of regulation and overtime. Both teams attempted 10 shots in the game, but it was CMU's 10
th effort that proved to be the difference.
With just 44 seconds left in the first OT period, Cooper Tubiana knocked in a header to the far post off a free kick at 99:16 for the game winner. Philip Petrakian was credited with the assist for taking the free kick.
Frostburg had several chances in the second half to grab the lead. Senior Jonathan Lippitt had a shot saved by Carnegie Mellon keeper Alec Lam in the 84
th minute, while junior Rodrigo Valenzuela had a shot saved by Lam in the 78
th minute.
Earlier in the half, Valenzuela hit the post with a shot in the 65
th minute. Following a foul on CMU, Valenzuela curled a free kick to the near post that hit inside of the post and bounced out to the six-yard box. Junior Mack Naughton tried to head the rebound into the goal but it sailed high keeping the score at 0-0.
The win is the third-straight to open the season for Carnegie Mellon as they sit at 3-0, while the Bobcats settle at 1-3.
FSU senior keeper Hassan Mostafa finished with five saves. He made a point-blank save in the 21
st minute and senior Erik Casterline stopped a bicycle kick at the post on the rebound attempt.
Frostburg returns to action tomorrow when it faces Kenyon at Carnegie Mellon at 3:00 pm.
