CHESTERTOWN, Md. – The 17
th-ranked Frostburg State baseball team posted a narrow 1-0 win over Washington College in non-league action, Tuesday.
Senior Teron Tyre lifted a fly ball into left field that allowed junior Devin Bell to score the game's only run in the top of the ninth.
The win pushes Frostburg's record to 28-10 overall, while the Shoreman fall to 26-12-1.
Senior Logan Hunt tossed just 0.1 innings and recorded the final out in the bottom of the eighth before Tyre's sacrifice fly scored Bell. Senior Nick Huff came on in the ninth and allowed just one hit for his 11th save this season.
Both team's registered just four hits and Bobcat senior starter Anderson Burgess struckout 13 batters over 7.2 innings, but didn't factor in the decision.
He allowed just three hits and struckout two or more batters in five innings. After surrendering two hits in the second inning, he retired the side in the third, fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh innings.
Bell led the Bobcats with two hits and a walk. Senior Jamaal Windom and junior Cody Harman registered the other hits.
Frostburg had a chance to break onto the scoreboard in the fourth. Windom singled, Bell walked and senior Zach Keeler was handed a free pass to load the bases. However, WC used a fielder's choice to escape the inning.
Following FSU's run in the ninth, Washington threatened in the home half of the inning when it too loaded the bases.
A hit batter, single and walk gave the hosts the chance for the win but Harman tagged a runner out home for the second out of the inning and Huff struckout the final batter.
Frostburg State returns to action on Thursday when it travels to Washington & Jefferson at 4:30 pm.
