FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg softball team picked up two more wins at home this season with a sweep of Shenandoah, Wednesday. The Bobcats posted 5-2 and 10-2 (6 innings) victories.
The sweep improves Frostburg's home record to 6-0 this spring and pushes its overall record to 18-6. FSU has won nine-straight games.
Sophomore Allison Short struckout six batters in 7.0 innings in game one and allowed just two earned runs for her sixth win.
The Bobcats fell behind 2-0 through 3.5 innings until the bottom of the fourth when they scored two runs to tie the contest. In the fifth, FSU added three runs for the 5-2 final.
Senior Renay Aubel opened the fourth with a single to right field before freshman Olivia Ford came on as a pinch runner. Two batters and two singles later, Ford scored when sophomore Sam Gatton singled up the middle.
Short evened the score at 2-2 with an RBI single to center that scored senior Taylor Blevins to cap the fourth.
The Bobcats took the lead for good in the fifth when junior Hannah Tavik singled home junior Selina Matulonis for the frame's first run. Junior Megan Tracey scored on a wild pitch and senior Lauren Capece singled home Aubel for the final run.
Tavik, Aubel and Blevins each finished with two hits.
In the second contest, Tavik improved to 10-1 in the circle with an eight-strikeout performance. She allowed just two earned runs as Frostburg won in six innings, 10-2.
Tavik was as equally impressive at the plate as she finished 3-for-3 with five RBI and two runs scored. Both Blevins and Capece finished 2-for-3 with two RBI, while sophomore Rae Harrison scored two runs.
Frostburg scored runs in five of the six innings, including a four-run first frame. Tavik tripled home freshman Catherine Kim before Blevins singled home Tavik for the first two runs. Capece added the second two when she singled home Blevins and Aubel.
The Bobcats plated two more runs in the second and third frames. Tavik singled home another run in the second and Blevins doubled home Tavik as FSU surged to a 6-1 lead. Tavik struck again in the third with an RBI single that tacked two more runs to the scoreboard for an 8-2 cushion.
Tavik had a sacrifice fly in the fifth that increased Frostburg's lead to nine before senior Allison Williams doubled home Matulonis for the final run.
The Bobcats return to action on Saturday with a doubleheader at Mary Washington at 1:00 pm.
