CRESSON, Pa. – Junior Devin Bell smacked three home runs and drove in nine runs as the 17
th-ranked Frostburg State baseball team captured two wins over Mount Aloysius, Wednesday, in non-conference action.
The Bobcats improve to 27-10 on the season after capturing an 8-4 victory in game one and a 7-6 win in the nightcap. It's the fifth-straight sweep of a two-game series for Frostburg this season.
The Mounties fall to 20-18 with the two losses.
Bell continued his stellar return from an injury with three more home runs, nine RBI and six hits. He has hit one home run in each of the last five games since returning from his injury and has totaled seven homers during that stretch.
In game one, junior Ryan Callahan picked up his fourth win of the spring on the mound after tossing 4.0 innings, scattering four hits and allowing just two earned runs. Senior Logan Hunt earned his first save of the season after pitching the final three innings.
Senior Connor Cooper got the offense on track in the second inning when he doubled to lead off the frame and scored when senior Zach Keeler singled him home.
Two innings later, Frostburg tacked on two more runs when junior Brad Garrant walked and Cooper singled to start the inning. Sophomore Chad Wein singled home Garrant and junior Cody Harman hit a sacrifice fly to right field that allowed Cooper to cross home plate for a 3-0 lead.
Mount Aloysius plated two runs in the fourth to narrow its deficit, but Frostburg answered with two runs in the fifth for a 5-2 edge.
Senior Jamaal Windom singled and stole second base before senior Pat Sines singled him home. Sines later stole second, advanced to third on a fly ball to right field and scored when Keeler singled.
Bell highlighted the sixth inning with a three run bomb that scored Sines and Windom.
The Mounties scored two runs, one each in the sixth and seventh, to narrow the final count to 8-4.
In the second game, junior Lane Ward earned his fourth win of the season after tossing 4.0 innings and allowing just two unearned runs. Senior Nick Huff tossed the final inning and earned his 10
th save of the season.
Frostburg led throughout the contest, but the Mounties made things interesting late in the game.
Bell plated the first run of the contest when he singled home Windom in the top of the first inning. In the second, Bell doubled home two more runs, this time scoring junior JT Tipton and sophomore Evan Colon.
In the fourth, Bell hit his first homer of the game, a two-run shot that scored Windom as the Bobcats led 6-0.
Mount Aloysius started its rally in the bottom of the fourth with two runs that cut into Frostburg's lead, 6-2. The hosts added two more runs in fifth on a two-run single.
Bell plated Frostburg's final run in the sixth with a solo home run for a 7-4 lead.
MTA further narrowed its deficit with one run in the sixth and one more in the seventh before Huff sealed the win in the ninth.
Frostburg State has postponed this afternoon's contest at Penn State Altoona and will host La Roche tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 pm for senior day.
