Softball Splits With Catholic

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State softball team split a pair of games with Catholic University, Wednesday afternoon. A three-run homerun from junior Hannah Tavik gave the Bobcats a 3-1 victory in game one, before falling to the Cardinals, 8-7 in the night cap.

Tavik finished the day 3-for-7 with six RBI, including the winning three-run homer in game one. Sophomore Sam Gatton finished with a perfect 3-for-3 with one run in the first game, and 2-for-4 with an RBI in game two. Senior Taylor Blevins (2-for-6) also totaled two RBI on the day.

In the circle, sophomore Allison Short threw a complete seven innings for the Bobcats in game one, she totaled three strikeouts and only allowed one run to pick up her 10th win of the spring.

Game one got off to a defensive start, with no one reaching home plate until the bottom of the third inning when Tavik smashed a homerun over left field to score Gatton and Short to give FSU a three-run cushion.

Catholic returned with a homerun of its own in the fourth inning from Megan Collin, to give the Cardinals their only run of the game.

In the night cap, Tavik pitched 5.0 innings for the Bobcats and struck out two, while freshman Ali Caulkins pitched the final two innings and struck out one batter.

Catholic jumped out to a quick start, scoring three runs in the first inning to take the lead. However, FSU fought back in the bottom of the first when Tavik hit an RBI single to score Gatton, followed by Tavik scoring a pitching error.

FSU took the lead in the second inning when Tavik hit another RBI single to score both Gatton and junior Selina Matulonis to go up, 4-3 over the Cardinals. Senior Renay Aubel capped the scoring in the second inning with an RBI single up the middle.

The Bobcats extended their lead in the third inning when senior Lauren Capece reached home plate from a fielding error by the Catholic short stop, to take a 6-3 advantage.

However, the Cardinals fought back in the fifth inning to tie the game, 6-6, from back-to-back doubles into right field. Catholic took the lead again in the sixth inning from an RBI double from Kristina Loz to go up, 7-6. The Cardinals scored another run in the sixth inning from a sacrifice fly to take a two run advantage over the Bobcats.

FSU attempted to comeback in the bottom of the seventh inning when junior Emily Harvey hit an RBI single to bring the game within one, however it wasn't enough and Catholic walked away with the 8-7 victory.

The Bobcats will return to the field Tuesday, May 3 for a doubleheader against Stevenson at home. Opening pitch is set to start at 3:30 pm.
