Softball Ends Season With Split

FROSTBURG, Md. – In the final doubleheader of the season, the Frostburg State softball team split with Stevenson University, Tuesday evening. The Bobcats won the first game, 7-5, before dropping the night cap, 4-3 in eight innings.

Junior Hannah Tavik hit two home runs on the day, including the game-tying home run in game two to send the game into extra innings. At the plate, she finished the day going 4-for-5, totaling four RBI including two sacrifice flies, two home runs and a double.

Tavik also started in the circle in game one for the Bobcats; she pitched 6.1 innings with seven strikeouts to pick up her 13th win of the season. Freshman Ali Caulkins pitched the final 0.2 innings and earned her second save of the season.

Senior Renay Aubel (4-for-7) had one run and a double while senior Allison Williams ended the day going 3-for-4 with two RBI.

Stevenson scored first in the second inning of game one, with a double down the right field line to give the Mustang's a 1-0 lead.

FSU took the lead in the fourth inning when Williams hit a two-run RBI single, followed by senior Taylor Blevins hitting an RBI single up the middle.

The Bobcats extended their lead by five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 6-1 advantage. First, senior Lauren Capece hit an RBI single to score Tavik.  Junior Emily Zengel then hit a sacrifice fly to score Blevins and Williams ended the inning with an RBI single to score Capece.

Stevenson started to come back in the sixth inning when Jasmyn Ogletree hit a home run, followed by Kristen Mueller reaching home plate from a fielding error by the FSU right fielder. However, Tavik came back in the bottom of the sixth with a home run into centerfield to give the Bobcats a 7-3 advantage.

Stevenson scored two more runs in the seventh inning but it wasn't enough as the Bobcats walked away with the 7-5 victory.

In the night cap, FSU jumped on the board first in the third inning when Tavik hit a sacrifice fly to score sophomore Sam Gatton. However, Stevenson tied the ball game in the fifth inning when Erin Stephey scored from a Bobcat fielding error.

Tavik hit another sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth to score freshman Olivia Ford and give the Bobcats a 2-1 advantage.

In the top of the seventh inning, Stevenson's Mueller hit an infield homer to bring in two-runs and give the Mustangs a 3-2 lead.

However, Tavik hit a game-tying homer in the bottom of the seventh inning to send the ball game into extra innings tied at three.

Stevenson's Ogletree hit an RBI single in the eighth inning to ultimately seal the victory for the Mustangs.

Sophomore Allison Short pitched all eight innings for the Bobcats only allowing two earned runs and totaling one strikeout.

The Bobcats season comes to an end with a 28-16 overall record.
