FROSTBURG, Md. – A late run in the seventh inning carried the third-seeded Frostburg State softball team, 3-2, over fourth-seeded Mary Washington to advance to the next round of the 2016 Capital Athletic Conference Tournament. The Bobcats then faced second-seeded and No. 8 Christopher Newport and fell the Captains, 8-0.
With the loss the to CNU, the Bobcats were eliminated from the CAC Tournament and the Captains will face Salisbury in the title game tomorrow at 10:00 am.
In the first game of the day, the Bobcats used a walk-off sacrifice fly to earn the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning and eliminate UMW from the tournament.
The scoring got started in the bottom of the third inning when senior Taylor Blevins doubled to center field and scored sophomore Megan Tracey to give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead.
The Bobcats scored again in the fourth inning from an RBI single by junior Emily Zengel to sophomore Sam Gatton.
Mary Washington got on the board in the fifth inning from a fielder's choice and the Eagles' Emily Briggs made it across home plate to make it a 2-1 ball game. The Eagles' tied the game up, 2-2, in the top of the seventh inning with an RBI single.
However, the Bobcats came back in the bottom of the seventh inning when senior Lauren Capece hit a sacrifice fly to center field that allowed Tracey to score and lift FSU over the Eagle's to advance to the next round.
Sophomore Allison Short pitched a complete game, striking out two and only allowing two runs. This is her ninth win of the season.
At the plate, junior Hannah Tavik went 3-for-4, while Blevins (1-for-3) and Capece (0-for-2) each totaled an RBI a piece.
A fast start carried CNU over the Bobcats in game two. The Captains scored four runs in the first inning and managed to hold the Bobcats scoreless throughout the rest of the ball game.
Despite earning seven hits, including two in the bottom of the seventh, the Bobcats could not get past the tough CNU defense.
The Bobcats had a late scoring opportunity in the bottom of the seventh inning, when freshman Catherine Kim reached first base on an error, followed by hits from Capece and sophomore Rae Harrison to load the bases. However, a double-play by the CNU defense held the Bobcats from scoring and ended the game.
Freshman Ali Caulkins, Short and Tavik all saw time in the circle for FSU. Tavik pitched the final 1.1 innings for the Bobcats and stuck out two batters with no runs allowed.
Junior Selina Matulonis, Gatton, Capece, Zengel and Tavik each had hits for the Bobcats in game two.
FSU will return to the field Wednesday, April 27
th for a doubleheader against Catholic at 3 pm.
