Bobcats Advance In CAC Tournament

SALISBURY, Md. – The third-seeded Frostburg State softball team slipped past fourth-seeded York (Pa.), (7-6), in an elimination round to advance in the 2016 Capital Athletic Conference Tournament. Earlier in the day, the Bobcats fell to the second-seeded and #8 ranked Christopher Newport Captains, 4-3.

The Bobcats used a late comeback in the second half of the game to hold off the Spartans and advance to the next round of play. York fell to Mary Washington, 2-1, in the first game of the tournament. CNU used a late run in the seventh inning to move past Frostburg State and advances to the next day of competition.

In game one, the Bobcats took an early lead over the Captains, and held a three run advantage through the top of the fourth inning. Senior Renay Aubel got things started in the first inning when she hit an RBI single to right center to score sophomore Sam Gatton.

In the second inning, senior Allison William homered to left field to increase the Bobcat lead by two.

With runners on first and third, senior Lauren Capece drilled an RBI single into center field and scored freshman Olivia Ford to make it a 3-0 ballgame.

CNU closed the gap in the bottom of the fourth inning with an RBI single up the middle to give the Captains one run, followed by a two-run homer from senior Hannah Cook to knot the game, 3-3.

A fielding error in the bottom of the seventh by the Bobcat second baseman allowed CNU's Meagan Jones to cross home plate and earn the victory.

In the circle, sophomore Allison Short threw for 6.0 innings and struck out three batters.

Aubel went 2-for-4 with an RBI while Williams (1-for-2) hit her first homerun of the season.

In the elimination round, the Bobcats used a fielding error by the Spartans second baseman in the bottom of the seventh inning to score the game-winning run and advance to the next round of the tournament.

York was first on the board in the second inning, using a two-run single to jump out to an early lead. However, FSU tightened the gap in the bottom of the third when senior Taylor Blevins hit an RBI single to score one run for the Bobcats.

A three-run fourth inning gave FSU its first lead of the ballgame and a two-run advantage. With runners on second and third,  Gatton hit a double through the left side and scored both Ford and Capece.

York used a single run in the top of the fifth inning to close the gap, 4-3. However, FSU answered in the bottom of the inning from a two-run single from sophomore Rae Harrison to give the Bobcats a three run lead.

The Spartans returned in the top of the seventh inning to score three runs and tie the game, 6-6.

However, the Bobcats did not give up and senior Mary Ann Moore scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning from a York fielding error and for the 7-6 victory.

Freshman Ali Caulkins pitched 6.0 innings for the Bobcats; she totaled five strikeouts, three runs and only five hits allowed. Junior Hannah Tavik closed the game and earned the win.

At the plate, Harrison went 2-for-4 and had two RBI, while Capece finished 2-for-3 with two runs.

FSU will move on to the next day of competition and face No. 5 Mary Washington tomorrow at 12 pm.
