Love, Rolland, Cullison Lead Men’s Lax Over UMW

FROSTBURG, Md. –Senior Spenser Love had a team-high six points and senior Tate Rolland and junior Chase Cullison each tallied five points each as the Frostburg State men's lacrosse team defeated Mary Washington, 20-13, in the opening round of the 2016 Capital Athletic Conference Men's Lacrosse Tournament Tuesday afternoon at Bobcat Stadium.
 
Love led the Bobcats (15-3) with four goals and two assists while Rolland notched five goals, including two in each of the first two quarters. Cullison scored one and dished out four assists and sophomore Ethan Aikin added four goals in the high-scoring affair.
 
Senior Erik Geiser continued to dominate on face-offs and won 21-of-29 and picked up seven ground balls.
 
The Bobcats led in in shots (47-43) and ground balls (37-24), while both teams finished 16-of-17 in clear attempts.
 
Rolland opened the game with the Bobcats' first goal off a Cullison pass, but Mary Washington (7-10) had the next two to take its only lead of the game. Frostburg then had five more goals to close out the first quarter, including two from Aikin.
 
This time it was the Eagles who scored the quarter opener, as Shane McKenzie found the back of the net. Frostburg answered back with four-straight, including back-to-back marks from Rolland, as the hosts led 10-3 with 4:13 to go before halftime.
 
Mike Marson and Miles Davis then started a UMW rally that lasted into the third quarter to bring the visitors within three, 10-7, with 9:41 to play in the third. Aikin added his final goal of the game, but Marson had a hand in the next two, scoring the first unassisted and dishing a pass to Chris White to bring Mary Washington back within two, 11-9.
 
The resilient Bobcats had three of the next four to take a 14-10 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
 
Geiser then found senior Blake Grudzien after winning the opening face-off, and Grudzien slipped a shot past the Eagle keeper for a goal just 13 seconds in.
 
UMW had the next goal, but FSU kept pounding as Love added two goals and an assist in the final quarter and the Bobcats finished the game on a 5-2 run.
 
Senior goalkeeper Tom Kraemer finished with eight saves in the win.
 
Marson led the Eagles with five goals and one assist, while Alexander Friedrich and Sam Wasson split time in the crease to combine for seven saves.
 
The Bobcats hit the road Saturday, April 23 to take on one-seed Salisbury in the tournament semifinals. Opening face-off is scheduled for 12:00 pm.
