FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State softball team fell to #5 Salisbury in both games of its doubleheader, Sunday afternoon. The Bobcats dropped a 5-1 decision to the Sea Gulls in the first game before losing 9-0 in six innings in the night cap.
FSU ended its regular-season campaign finishing 24-12 and 9-5 in the Capital Athletic Conference.
In game one, the Bobcats out-hit the Sea Gulls (31-4, 13-1 CAC) 6-5 but it wasn't enough to overcome the tough Salisbury defense.
Junior Hannah Tavik ended game one going 1-for-3 and earning FSU's only RBI. Tavik also saw time in the circle, pitching 3.1 innings and striking out two.
Sophomore Allison Short started the game in the circle for the Bobcats; she threw for 2.2 innings, with two strikeouts and three earned runs. Senior Mary Ann Moore closed the final inning with one strikeout and one run.
Salisbury held the lead for the entire duration of the first game, the Sea Gulls jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning when Paige Knussman hit a two-run double followed by Katie Sebbane getting hit by a pitch to send Knussman home for a run.
Tavik's RBI single came in the sixth inning to score junior Jessica Dubbs, but Salisbury came back in the seventh inning to score their final run and earn the victory.
The Sea Gulls led from start to finish in game two behind six innings by Brooke Mizelle. She finished with six strikeouts, only three hits and zero runs.
Salisbury scored in the first inning from an RBI double and then put another run on the board in the third inning to make it 2-0. A big fourth inning opened up the lead for the Sea Gulls as Caitlin Lake hit a two-run homer and Knussman closed the inning with an RBI double to give Salisbury a five run advantage.
FSU had a chance to score in the bottom of the fifth inning, with a runner on third base, but the Salisbury defense held strong and ended the inning with two strikeouts.
The Sea Gulls scored a run in the fifth inning and then two more in the sixth inning to walk away with the 9-0 victory.
Tavik pitched 1.2 innings for the Bobcats and struck out one. Freshman Ali Caulkins and Moore also spent time in the circle.
The Bobcats will head into the CAC tournament as the No.3 seed and will face No.2 Christopher Newport Thursday, April 21 at noon. The tournament will be hosted by Salisbury, with the first round of play beginning at Thursday, April 21 at 10:00 am.
