BUENA VISTA, Va. – The Frostburg State softball swept both of its games against Southern Virginia, Wednesday afternoon. The Bobcats earned a 2-1 victory in game one before shutting out the Knights, 10-0, in the night cap.
Southern Virginia jumped on the board first in game one, Mollie Gabbert singled down the right field line to score Rachel Moore to give the Knights a one run lead after the first inning.
However, the Bobcats fought back and scored two runs in the fourth inning to ultimately seal the victory. A double from sophomore Sam Gatton scored senior Taylor Blevins and an error from the
Southern Virginia third baseman allowed Gatton to score the second run.
On the mound, sophomore Allison Short pitched all seven innings for the Bobcats; she totaled five strikeouts and only allowed one run. She notched her eighth win of the season.
Freshman Ali Caulkins earned her second career win and also posted her first career shutout in FSU's 10-0 victory in game two. Caulkins posted four strikeouts and only allowed one hit and one walk.
The Bobcats jumped on the board in the third inning when a two-run double from junior Hannah Tavik drove in two FSU runners.
A home run from senior Lauren Capece in the fourth inning gave the Bobcats the 3-0 advantage. She was followed by a ground out from Caulkins that allowed Gatton to score and notch another run for FSU in the fourth.
An RBI double from junior Selina Matulonis and an error from the Knight's short stop gave FSU two more runs in the sixth inning to make it a 7-0 ballgame.
FSU's final three runs came in the top of the ninth inning. Tavik hit a two-run double that scored freshmen Olivia Ford and Catherine Kim to give the Bobcats nine total runs. The tenth and final run came from an RBI single from senior Renay Aubel to seal the FSU victory.
Tavik (3-for-9) finished the day with four RBI, including two doubles. Capece (1-for-5) earned an RBI and one homerun during the second game.
The Bobcats return home for a doubleheader tomorrow against Dickinson. The first game is set to start at 3 pm.
