FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State softball team split with Dickinson in a mid-week, non-conference, doubleheader, Thursday afternoon. The Bobcats earned the 2-1 win in game one before dropping, 10-8, to the Red Devils in game two.
At the plate, sophomore Sam Gatton led the Bobcat offense, finishing the day 2-for-5 with two RBI and a home run. Junior Hannah Tavik (3-for-6) completed the game with three RBI a single and a sacrifice fly.
Sophomore Allison Short pitched 5.0 innings in game one and struck out five batters with only one earned run. Freshman Ali Caulkins pitched the final two innings of the first game, earning the win and striking out two.
The Red Devils got on the board first when Nicole Piet was able to steal home and score Dickinson's only run of the game.
Tavik put the Bobcats on the board in the third inning when she hit an RBI single to left field and junior Jessica Dubbs and sophomore Allison Short scored, giving FSU a 2-1 advantage that would ultimately determine the Bobcat victory.
In game two, the Bobcats blazed to a fast start, earning seven runs in the second inning to take a 7-0 lead over the Red Devils.
The scoring started with a home run from Gatton, followed by another homer from junior Emily Zengel that scored senior Renay Aubel. Senior Taylor Blevins continued the offense with a double down the left field line that gave the Bobcats two more runs to take a 5-0 lead.
The inning ended with a sacrifice fly from Tavik that scored Dubbs and Gatton hit an RBI single to give FSU the seven run advantage.
However, the Red Devils fought their way back into the game in the third inning, scoring four runs to close the gap and make it a 7-4 ballgame.
Dickinson continued to dominate in the fourth inning, scoring three more runs to tie the game, 7-7. Piet hit a two-run single and Casey Ditzler hit a sacrifice fly to knot the game.
Two more runs from the Red Devils gave them their first lead of the day and the advantage over FSU in the fifth inning.
FSU tried to fight back in the sixth inning, with an RBI double from Blevins to score senior Lauren Capece to bring the game within one, 9-8.
However, an RBI single from Dickinson's Alicia Lane in the seventh inning ultimately determined the 10-8 victory for the Red Devils.
Three Bobcats saw time in the circle in game two. Tavik pitched the first 3.1 innings and struckout five before Caulkins came in to pitch 3.1. Senior Mary Ann Moore finished the game for FSU with one strikeout.
The Bobcats will return to the field Saturday, April 16 for a doubleheader against York (Pa.). Opening pitch is set to start at 1:00 pm.
