Pair of Scoring Outbursts Carry Men’s Lacrosse

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Frostburg State men's lacrosse team used a scoring run in the second quarter and another in the third to earn a 17-8 victory over Mary Washington, Wednesday.
 
The Bobcats (13-3, 4-3) trailed by a goal twice in the opening minutes of the second quarter before senior Nick Stailey scored off an assist from senior Tate Rolland that kick started a 5-0 run with 6:18 showing.
 
Sophomore Adam Gross made it 6-5 with a goal at 5:37 and Rolland scored just under two minutes later for a 7-5 lead. Sophomore Ethan Aikin closed out the half for the Bobcats with an unassisted goal for an 8-5 halftime cushion.
 
Rolland capped the 5-0 run with the first tally of the second half at 12:41.
 
The Eagles (6-9, 3-4) scored twice in the third to pull within 10-7, but Frostburg put things out of reach with the game's next seven goals that extended well into the fourth quarter.
 
Junior Chase Cullison found Gross with 4:46 left in the third and the Bobcats never let up. Senior Spenser Love connected with Rolland for a 12-7 advantage at 3:57 and sophomore Keegan Colegrove scored two goals at 3:02 and 2:08 as FSU closed out the third with a 14-7 lead.
 
The momentum continued into the fourth as Cullison found senior Blake Grudzien before finding the net himself moments later. Grudzien scored again with 8:33 left in the game for Frostburg's final goal.
 
The Bobcats dominated the contest statistically, finishing a perfect 10-for-10 on clears, winning 21-of-28 face-offs and scooping up 52 ground balls.
 
Rolland paced the Bobcat lineup with three goals and two assists, while Gross had three goals and one assist. Love finished with two goals and two assists.
 
Seniors Tom Kraemer and Taylor Schmitz each saw time in net. Kramer played nearly 54 minutes and registered eight saves, while Schmitz finished with one. Senior Erik Geiser won 15-of-20 face offs, while junior Kyle Horak was 6-of-8.
 
Seven different players registered a point for Mary Washington. Mike Marson finished with one goal and three assists, while Miles Davis finished with two goals.
 
Frostburg returns to action on Saturday for Senior Day when it hosts St. Mary's at noon.
