No. 16 Baseball Sweeps Mary Washington

FROSTBURG, Md. – The No. 16 Frostburg State baseball team swept Mary Washington in a Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader, Sunday afternoon. Junior Brad Garrant hit a two-run walkoff homerun in game one to lift the Bobcats, 5-4, and a four-run first inning coupled with an outstanding effort on the mound from sophomore Greg Schneider helped FSU to a 10-3 win in game two.

Frostburg (19-7, 11-4 CAC) had a run in both the first and fourth innings before UMW (21-14, 5-10 CAC) used a four-run sixth to take the lead in game one.

With two outs in the bottom of the eighth and senior Pat Sines on first, classmate Jeremy Remalia doubled to right field to send Sines across home and bring the game back within one, 4-3.

In the bottom of the ninth, junior J.T. Tipton reached first after being walked. Garrant then hit a ball to deep left-center to send Tipton and himself across the plate for the winning runs.

Senior Connor Cooper (2-for-3) and Remalia (2-for-4) both finished the game with two hits, while Garrant and Remalia had two RBI each. Senior Anderson Burgess had five strikeouts in 5.1 innings of work, while Callahan also fanned five in 3.2 innings to get the win.

Game two saw more action early on as senior KJ Hockaday drove in classmate Jamaal Windom in the bottom of the first to get a quick lead. Senior Zach Keeler then drove in Hockaday on a single up the middle. With Garrant on third, Keeler on second and senior Connor Cooper on first, senior Pat Sines sliced a ball to left field to plate Garrant and Keeler and give FSU a 4-0 lead.

Frostburg earned two more runs in the third as junior Cody Harman drove in Keeler and a single to center field from Windom saw Sines cross the plate.

UMW got its first run of the game in the top of the fourth when David Slupek drove in Kyle Bynum, but it was short lived as Keeler again hit a ball up the middle in the bottom half of the inning to bring Hockaday home and give the Bobcats a 7-1 cushion.

The Eagles got two more runs in the next inning, after James Keller hit a dinger over the left field wall to bring in Brian Burns.

With both pitchers keeping things in check for the next two innings, Cooper homered in the bottom of the seventh to keep FSU ahead, 8-3.

The bottom of the eighth saw two more Bobcat runs, this time with Cooper driving in Hockaday and Sines bringing in Garrant for the final tallies.

Junior Jake Stephens then got Eagles to fly out to left field and struck out another swinging in the top of the ninth to earn the victory.

Windom (3-for-5), Garrant (3-for-5), and Keeler (3-for-5) all collected three hits, while Sines finished the game with three RBI.

Sophomore ace Greg Schneider finished with 11 strikeouts in 7.0 innings of work to improve to 5-0 on the season. Stephens added two more strikeouts in 2.0 innings.

The Bobcats return to action Wednesday, April 13 when they take on Marymount (Va.) at Bob Wells Field. First pitch is slated for 3:00 pm.
