FROSTBURG, Md. – Sophomore starter Lane Ward tied a season-high with seven strikeouts and nearly tossed a complete game to help power Frostburg State to a 7-3 win over Southern Virginia, Wednesday.
Ward pitched 8.0 innings and allowed just three earned runs, while walking only one. He allowed one Southern Virginia (7-17, 3-7) hit through the first five innings of play, while striking out six.
The Knights scored their first run in the sixth on a run-producing ground out, but Ward again held SVU hitless in both the seventh and eighth innings. In the ninth, he surrendered two runs before senior Kyle McCormack came on in relief for the final three outs.
The Bobcats (13-7, 6-4) scored two runs in the second and seventh innings and tacked on solo runs in the third, sixth and eight frames.
Frostburg plated its first two runs of the contest in the second inning when sophomore Chad Wein reached on a throwing error by the Knight third baseman. The error allowed both seniors Zach Keeler and Connor Cooper to score for a 2-0 advantage.
In the third, senior Jamaal Windom walked, stole second base and scored from second on a failed pickoff attempt by the pitcher when the throw went into center field.
Keeler led off the sixth frame with a single to center and he advanced to second on a wild pitch. Sophomore Greg Schneider singled up the middle that allowed Keeler to score for a 4-1 cushion.
Frostburg struck again in the seventh with two more runs. Junior JT Tipton singled to first base and the next batter, senior KJ Hockaday, crushed a home run to left center as the Bobcats opened up a 6-1 lead.
Windom plated the Bobcats' final run in the eighth when he tripled home senior Teron Tyre, who was pinch running for freshman Chase Harding.
Hockaday led the Bobcats at the plate with a 1-for-3 effort with two RBI and one run scored. Keeler was 1-for-3 with two runs, while Windom was 1-for-3 with an RBI, a runs scored and two walks.
Frostburg returns to action on Saturday when it hosts No. 11 Christopher Newport for a twinbill at 12:00 pm.
