#22 Bobcats Sweep #11 Captains

FROSTBURG, Md. – The 22nd-ranked Frostburg State baseball team cruised to a sweep of 11th-ranked Christopher Newport behind a pair of dominating pitching performances, Saturday afternoon at a windy Bob Wells Field.

Frostburg (14-7, 7-4) posted a 7-0 shutout of the nationally ranked Captains (19-8, 7-5) in the opener before collecting a 6-2 win in the nightcap.

Sophomore starter Greg Schneider kept his record perfect with another dominating performance. He tossed a complete-game one with 12 strikeouts that pushed his record to 4-0. He's had 10 or more strikeouts in five of six outings this year and his start against CNU wasn't any different.

Schneider fanned two batters in the first and second innings and he fanned all three in the eighth. He scattered nine hits and walked just three.

In the second contest, senior Anderson Burgess nearly went the distance to remain perfect on the year. He improved his record to 3-0 after fanning a season-high 11, while scattering five hits with two earned runs. He struck out two batters in the second, third, fourth, fifth and eighth innings.

Senior Nick huff posted his fifth save of the season after registering the game's final out.

At the plate, senior Jamaal Windom combined to finish 4-for-9 with two runs; senior Zach Keeler posted three hits, with four RBI, while junior Brad Garrant was 4-for-7 with a run and an RBI.

Frostburg opened the scoring in the first game with two runs in the second. Sophomore Chad Wein singled up the middle to score Keeler and get the Bobcats on the board first. FSU earned its second run when junior Cody Harman reached on a fielder's choice and senior Pat Sines made it across home plate.

In the fourth inning, junior JT Tipton grounded out to second base, Wein was able to score on the play and FSU took a 3-0 lead.

An error from the Captain's short stop scored both Windom and Harmon and gave the Bobcats a 5-0 advantage after the sixth inning.

Frostburg capped its scoring in the bottom of the eighth inning when senior KJ Hockaday hit a triple and advanced to home plate on a fielding error by the CNU short stop.

In game two, CNU opened up its scoring in the top of the first inning. Sophomore Brandon Ginch hit a RBI single to left field to give the Captain's a 1-0 lead.

However, FSU answered in the bottom of the first, scoring three runs to take over the lead. A two-run triple from Hockaday put the Bobcats on the board and Keeler followed with a RBI double down the left field line make it a 3-1 ball game.

In the third inning, Keeler hit a sacrifice fly to score Garrant and open up the Bobcat lead by three.

Christopher Newport tried to close the gap in the fourth inning, scoring one run, to make it a two-run ball game.

However, it wasn't enough as the Bobcats extended their lead in the sixth inning when Keeler homered to left field.

Stines sealed the victory for FSU in the eighth inning when he hit an RBI double and gave the Bobcats the 6-2 advantage.

CNU's Jordan Mason finished the day 4-for-9, while his teammate Keith Roberts (4-for-7) ended the day with two doubles for the Captains.

The Bobcats will return to the field Tuesday, April 5 for a single game against Catholic at 3:30 pm.
