MARIETTA, Ohio – The 22
nd-ranked Frostburg baseball team used an early lead and good starting pitching to defeat Marietta, 8-5, Tuesday, in non-conference action.
The Bobcats (12-7) jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the first two innings and senior starter Anderson Burgess tossed five shutout innings for his second win of the season. He finished with three strikeouts and scattered five hits.
Seniors Connor Cooper and Zach Keeler led Frostburg at the plate as they each drove in two runs. Cooper was 2-for-3 with two RBI, two doubles and two walks, while Keeler was 3-for-4 with two RBI and a double. Senior KJ Hockaday was 3-for-5 with two doubles, an RBI and three runs scored.
Senior Jamaal Windom and Hockaday led off the first inning with two singles and both advanced to third and second base, respectively following a wild pitch. Junior Brad Garrant hit an infield single that scored Windom for the game's first run.
Two batters later, Keeler smacked a double to left center that plated both Hockaday and Garrant for a 3-0 cushion.
In the second, Hockaday posted an RBI ground out as FSU surged to a 4-0 lead when Windom crossed the plate for the second time.
Meanwhile, Burgess kept Marietta's hitters in check and allowed just four singles and one double.
Frostburg added to its lead with single runs in the fifth, sixth and eighth innings before the Pioneers finally cracked the scoreboard.
Hockaday led off the fifth with a double to left center and advanced to third on a ground out, before crossing the plate on a double from Cooper.
Sophomore Chad Wein drove a 2-1 pitch over the left field fence for his second home run of the season in sixth and Frostburg's lead swelled to 7-0 in the eighth when senior Teron Tyre scored on a fielder's choice.
In the bottom of the eighth, Marietta cracked the scoreboard with its first run, courtesy of a bases loaded walk.
In the top of the ninth, Frostburg pushed its lead back to seven, 8-1, when Cooper hit his second double of the game, this time to left field that scored Hockaday.
Marietta narrowed the final gap to 8-5 with a grand slam in the bottom of the ninth before senior Nick Huff came on to pitch for the final two outs for his fourth save.
The Bobcats return to action tomorrow when they host Southern Virginia at Bob Wells Field at 3:00 pm.
