FROSTBURG, Md. – The 16
th-ranked Frostburg baseball team collected a 9-8 win over visiting Wesley on Saturday in game one of a doubleheader and the victory handed Bobcat head coach Guy Robertson his 300
th collegiate win.
Sophomore starter Greg Schneider tossed 7.0 inning on the mound and senior Connor Cooper tripled home three runs that helped Frostburg earn the win in the opener that handed Robertson his 300
th. He has 236 wins at the helm of FSU.
Schneider finished with four strikeouts and allowed just four earned runs for his third win (3-0) of the spring.
Juniors Devin Bell and Brad Garrant each posted RBI singles in the first frame as Frostburg (11-7, 5-4) surged to a quick 2-0 lead.
The Wolverines (10-11, 4-5) answered with two runs of their own in the third frame to even things at 2-2 before Frostburg captured the lead for good with five runs in the bottom half of the inning.
Senior KJ Hockaday opened the inning with a double before Bell doubled as well sending Hockaday across home plate. With the bases loaded later in the inning, Cooper tripled down the right field line that scored senior Zach Keeler, Garrant and Bell for a 6-2 lead. Junior JT Tipton capped the frame with a sacrifice fly that scored Cooper.
Wesley narrowed its deficit with three runs in the fifth and one more in the seventh to pull within one at 7-6 following the top of the seventh.
The Bobcats pushed their lead back to three with two runs in the bottom of the seventh. FSU capitalized on a throwing error by the Wesley pitcher that allowed both Tipton and junior Micah Headd to score for a 9-6 lead.
Wesley threatened with two runs in the ninth, but the Bobcats settled down and kept the visitors from pulling any closer. Senior reliever Nick Huff tossed the final two innings for his third save of the season.
In the second game, Wesley scored in seven of the nine innings for a 21-7 win. The Wolverines scored three runs in the first inning and never trailed. They added four runs in the fifth and five more in the eighth.
Hockaday and Tipton combined for a perfect 7-of-7 effort at the plate. Hockaday was 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, while Tipton was 4-for-4 with an RBI. Senior Jeremy Remalia was 1-for-1 with two RBI and two runs scored when he crushed a home run left field in the ninth inning.
Hockaday drove home Frostburg's first run in the first inning when he singled to left field that plated senior Jamaal Windom. In the fifth, Hockaday led off with a single up the middle and scored when Cooper singled down the left field line.
In the seventh, Keeler started the scoring with a single through the left side that scored sophomore Evan Colon. Sophomore Chad Wein doubled home Keeler and Tipton singled home Remalia.
Remalia highlighted the ninth inning for the Bobcats with his first home run of the season.
Frostburg returns to action on Tuesday when it travels to Marietta at 3:30 pm.
