GREENSBURG, Pa. – The Frostburg State softball team edged Pitt-Greensburg in both games of its doubleheader, Thursday afternoon. FSU won 5-2 in game one and came back in the second game to win, 5-2.
Seniors Hannah Tavik and Taylor Blevins led the Bobcats (12-6) behind the plate; each totaled three RBI between both games. Three Bobcats, senior Renay Aubel, Tavik and junior Emily Zengel, each hit a homerun in the first game of the doubleheader.
In the circle, Tavik picked up her seventh-straight win during the first game. She pitched all seven innings, allowed only two earned runs and struckout four batters.
The first game of the afternoon got off to a fast start for FSU when Tavik smashed a two-run homerun in the first inning to give the Bobcats a two run advantage.
However, a homerun by Pitt-Greensburg's Morgan Russo in the bottom of the first brought the game within one.
FSU scored again in the third inning when an error from Pitt-Greensburg's third baseman allowed Blevins to reach home plate.
In the sixth inning, Aubel homered to give FSU a three-run advantage. Pitt-Greensburg followed with a homerun in the bottom of the sixth to keep the game close.
Zengel smashed a homerun in the seventh inning to ultimately seal the victory for FSU.
In the second game, the Bobcats once again jumped out to a lead in the first inning. Tavik hit a RBI single to center field to score junior Jessica Dubbs. She was followed by Blevins hitting a two-run single to bring in two runners and make it a 3-0 ball game after the first inning of play.
A double by Pitt-Greensburg's Kellie Hutchinson brought in one runner and put the Bobcats on the board.
In the sixth inning, sophomore Rae Harrison hit a sacrifice fly to score Blevins and increase the FSU lead. Blevins hit a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning to make it a 4-1 ball game.
Pitt-Greensburg scored again in the bottom of the seventh inning from an RBI single; however it wasn't enough as FSU earned its second victory of the afternoon.
FSU junior Carlie Lewis and freshman Ali Caulkins both saw time in the circle. Lewis pitched 6.2 innings and only allowed one earned run to pick up her first win of the season. Caulkins was credited with her first save of the season.
The Bobcats will host their home and Capital Athletic Conference opener against Penn State-Harrisburg Saturday, March 26. The first game of the doubleheader is set to begin at 1:00 pm.
