FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State softball team cruised past Penn State-Harrisburg in its Capital Athletic Conference and home opener, Saturday afternoon. FSU won game one, 12-4, in six innings before downing the Lions in game two, 15-3, in five innings.
At the plate, junior Emily Zengel led the Bobcats finishing the day 6-for-8. She totaled six RBI, a homerun and two doubles. Senior Hannah Tavik went 5-for-8 with six RBI, a triple and two doubles while senior Renay Aubel (4-for-7) totaled four RBI and a homerun on the day.
The FSU offense got things off to a fast start in the first inning when Aubel doubled to left field to score Zengel and put a run on the board first. In the second inning, Tavik hit an RBI double to give the Bobcats a two-run advantage.
Penn State-Harrisburg closed the gap in the third inning, scoring two runs to tie the game. Rieley Loch hit an RBI double into center field and Amanda Hartman doubled to score Loch and knot the game, 2-2.
A big fourth inning opened up the lead for the Bobcats. Tavik hit an RBI single to left field to score junior Jessica Dubbs. Senior Lauren Capece also singled and moved two bases on a bad throw. A two-run double from sophomore Sam Gatton gave Frostburg a four-run lead and sophomore Rae Harrison finished the inning with a single to left field to give FSU a five run advantage.
The Lions' Erelle Sowers hit a two-run double in the sixth inning but it wasn't enough as the Bobcats used three more runs in the bottom of the inning to seal the victory.
In the bottom of the sixth, Zengel had a sacrifice hit to bring in junior Selina Matulonis and Tavik ended the game with a two-run double.
Sophomore Allison Short pitched all six innings for the Bobcats and struck out two batters. She picked up her fourth win of the season.
Penn State-Harrisburg's Hartman pitched 5.2 innings and took the loss.
In the second game, Penn State-Harrisburg got on the board first from a RBI single from Hartman, but it was all FSU after that.
In the bottom of the first, Tavik hit an RBI single down the right field line to tie the game, 1-1.
The Bobcats used a huge second inning, scoring seven runs, to run away with the ball game. Zengel started the inning off by hitting a two-run double to right field. Tavik followed with a triple to center field to score Zengel. Senior Taylor Blevins hit an RBI single to score Tavik before freshman Ali Caulkins hit a two-run double to center field. Gatton ended the inning with an RBI single to score Capece.
FSU continued its momentum into the third inning when Aubel hit an RBI single to give the Bobcats a eight run advantage, 9-1.
In the fourth inning, senior Mary Anne Moore singled up the middle to bring in two runners for FSU. Zengel followed with a three-run homer to give the Bobcats 14 runs.
Blevins ended the inning, earning FSU's 15
th run from an RBI single up the middle.
PSH's Loch hit a two-run double in the top of the fifth, however it wasn't enough as the Bobcats walked away with their second victory of the day.
In the circle, Tavik pitched 5.0 innings, threw four strikeouts and earned her eighth-straight win of the season.
For PSH, Jackie Furch and Erelle Sowers pitched 2.0 innings each and Furch was credited with the loss.
The Bobcats will face Wesley Saturday, April 2 for a doubleheader. The first game is set to start at 1:00 pm.
