FROSTBURG, Md. – Sixteenth-ranked Frostburg State opened its home slate, Wednesday, with a 7-4 win over visiting York (Pa.) in CAC baseball action.
Photo GalleryThe victory pushes the Bobcats (10-6) into a tie for fourth place in the league standings with York (6-14) as both teams sit at 4-3 in the league. The contest also marks collegiate win number 299 for head coach Guy Robertson.
Frostburg jumped out to a 5-0 cushion, before the Spartans battled back to close their deficit to one, 5-4 after the top of the sixth inning. However, senior Connor Cooper opened the bottom of the sixth with a long home run over the left center fence to extend FSU's lead to 6-4.
In the eighth, senior Jamaal Windom doubled and stole third base before junior Cody Harman singled down the left field line for the final run.
Sophomore starting pitcher Lane Ward struckout three batters in 5.0 innings of work and allowed just two earned runs for his first win of the year.
Senior Kyle McCormack and junior Jake Stephens each pitched an inning in relief, while senior Nick Huff tossed the final two innings with two strikeouts for his second save.
Junior Devin Bell led off the second inning with a single through the left side, advanced to second when junior Brad Garrant walked and Bell eventually ended up at third when senior Zach Keeler laid down a sacrifice bunt. Bell scored the game's first run on a wild pitch from York starter Randy Frankenfield.
Frostburg's biggest inning of the afternoon came in the third when Windom tripled home junior JT Tipton, senior KJ Hockaday singled home Windom and Garrant singled home both Bell and Hockaday.
York managed just three hits over the first three innings, until plating two runs in the fourth behind RBIs from Collin Crowell and Seth Brosius. Brosius later singled home a run in the sixth and Mohollen scored Crowell with a fielder's choice as YCP narrowed the deficit to 5-4.
Windom finished 3-for-5 with two runs scored, while Garrant was 2-for-4 with two RBI.
Frostburg returns to the field this Saturday when it hosts Wesley for a twinbill at 12:00 pm.
