Frostburg Smacks Four HRs In Win Over Southern Virginia

LEXINGTON, Va. – The 11th-ranked Frostburg State baseball squad smacked four home runs and used a seven-run seventh inning to run past Southern Virginia for a 17-8 victory, Wednesday.

Seniors Jamaal Windom, KJ Hockaday and Pat Sines, along with sophomore Greg Schneider each hit a home run to help lift the Bobcats to 8-3 overall and 2-1 in the CAC.

Sophomore Tyler Hoffman earned the win on the mound for Frostburg after allowing just two earned runs with one strikeout in 2.1 innings of work. Sophomore Daniel Richardson earned the start and fanned two in 5.0 innings but didn't factor in the decision.

Along with their home runs, Windom and Hockaday each drove in three runs, while Schneider finished with a game-high four hits and scored three times.

Southern Virginia (5-12, 1-3) scored the game's first run when Jordan Nase scored on a double play in the first inning. The Knights later led 3-2 after a pair of runs in the bottom of the third, but Frostburg's offense was too strong.

Schneider put Frostburg on the board with a solo homer to left center early in the top of the third. Four batters later, junior Brad Garrant singled home Hockaday as FSU led 2-1.

An inning later, senior Zach Keeler walked and eventually scored on a wild pitch before Hockaday crushed a three-run home run that scored junior JT Tipton, Schneider and Bell for a 6-3 lead.

Frostburg's biggest inning came in the seventh when it scored seven runs behind seven hits. Bell walked to lead off, Garrant doubled and senior Connor Cooper singled home Bell for the first run. Junior Cody Harmon doubled home Garrant and Windom hit a three-run home run that scored both Cooper and Harmon for an 11-6 advantage.

Tipton continued the output in the seventh when he singled to right field and an error on the Southern Virginia outfield allowed Schneider to score and Tipton later crossed the plate when Bell doubled to right field.

The Knights added single runs in the eighth and ninth, but Frostburg tacked on four more in the top of the ninth. Schneider tripled to kick start the inning and scored when Tipton reached base on a fielder's choice. Garrant hit a sacrifice fly that scored Tipton and Sines capped the inning with a two-run homer to left that plated Hockaday.

Schneider finished the afternoon 3-for-6 with four runs and an RBI, while Hockaday was 2-for-5 with three RBI and three runs scored. Both Windom's and Sines' only hit of the game resulted in home runs that scored five runs.

FSU plays Ferrum tomorrow in a single nine-inning contest at 2:30 pm.
