Softball Dominates Smith, Falls To Heidelberg

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Frostburg State softball team cruised to a 15-4 victory against Smith College, before falling, 4-2, to Heidelberg University, Monday afternoon.

The Bobcats quickly took the lead in game one against Smith College and the momentum did not stop there. FSU boasted a huge first inning that brought in six runs.

With the bases loaded, senior Taylor Blevins hit a three run triple that brought in junior Hannah Tavik, junior Emily Zengel and sophomore Sam Gatton. Soon after, Blevins scored from a RBI single from freshman Ali Caulkins.

To close the first inning, junior Jessica Dubbs hit a two run triple to score sophomore Rae Harrison and Caulkins.

FSU scored again in the second inning when Blevins hit an RBI single. Smith finally got points on the board in the third inning from a homerun from Rowan Turner.

However, the Bobcats continued to dominate on offense. Gatton tripled to right center for an RBI in the third inning and FSU scored two in the fourth inning from RBI singles by junior Selina Matulonis and Harrison.

The Bobcats ended the game in the fifth inning with five more runs scored, including a huge grand slam from Caulkins that brought in freshman Catherine Kim, Blevins and senior Renay Aubel.

Caulkins went 2-for-3 including five RBI and her first career grand slam. Blevins went 3-for-3 with three RBI.

In the circle, Tavik picked up her fourth win of the season and had eight strikeouts in 4.2 innings pitched.

In game two, Heidelberg jumped on the board in the second inning with two RBI however; FSU came back and scored from an RBI single from Dubbs in the second to make it a 2-1 ball game.

Dubbs hit another RBI single to tie the score at 2-2 after the fourth inning.

However, HU scored two runs in the sixth inning to ultimately seal the victory.

Dubbs went 2-for-3 with two RBI and senior Lauren Capece went 1-for-2 with a double.

Sophomore Allison Short pitched five innings for the Bobcats and took the loss.

The Bobcats return to action Wednesday, March 16 when they both Western New England (3 pm) and Bates (5 pm).
