Softball Cruises To Pair Of Shutouts

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Frostburg softball team cruised to a pair of shutouts on Sunday in its first two games of its annual spring break trip to Florida. Both victories came via shutout as the Bobcats downed Bethel (Minn.) 6-0 in the opener and allowed just two hits in a 2-0 blanking of TCNJ in the second.

The Bobcats improved their record to 5-3 with the two wins.

While FSU allowed just two hits against TCNJ, it allowed only four hits in the shutout of Bethel. Junior starter Hannah Tavik struckout three and scattered four hits, all over the first four innings, for her third win of the spring season.

Tavik was just as impressive at the plate finishing 1-for-3 with two RBI, while freshman Ali Caulkins was 1-for-1 with two RBI.

Sophomore Same Gatton led off the bottom of the first inning with a single to right center and later scored when senior Renay Aubel singled to second for a 1-0 lead.

The Bobcats exploded for five runs in the fourth to seal the win. Aubel led off with a single up the middle. Freshman Olivia Ford pinch ran for Aubel and scored the frame's first run when sophomore Rae Harrison singled to right. Caulkins drove in two more when she singled to right that plated both senior Taylor Blevins and junior Megan Tracey.

Tavik capped the scoring when she singled home both Gatton and junior Jessica Dubbs for the 6-0 cushion.

In the circle, Tavik held Bethel hitless over the final three innings with a strikeout in the sixth.

-------

Sophomore starter Allison Short posted a two-hit shutout in the circle in the win over TCNJ. She fanned two batters, handed out just one walk and surrendered a hit in the second and sixth innings.

Frostburg got on the scoreboard in the top of the third inning when Short led off the frame with a single to center field. Dubbs followed with another single and junior Emily Zengel singled home Short for a 1-0 lead.

In the fifth, FSU added its second and final run. Dubbs opened the inning with a single to center, Gatton bunt singled and Tavik posted an infield single to load the bases. Aubel smacked a sacrifice fly to left field that allowed Dubbs to score for the 2-0 final.

Zengel, Tavik and Dubbs each posted two hits in the game to lead Frostburg offensively.

The Bobcats return to action tomorrow when they face both Smith (1pm) and Heidelberg (3pm).
