FROSTBURG, Md. – Frostburg State finished with three players in double figures and outrebounded St. Mary's 41-36, but it wasn't enough as the Seahawks rebounded for a 65-64 win, Saturday.
The Bobcats (6-15, 4-10 CAC) led by as many as 14 points in the second half and were ahead by eight, 57-49, with 7:49 remaining. Over the next four minutes, Frostburg couldn't find the basket and St. Mary's used a 9-0 run to capture a 58-57 lead with 3:44 to play.
Sophomore Tyler Michael ended the drought for FSU with a layup at 3:19 and two minutes later, senior James Peters hit an off-balance layup and a free throw that put the Bobcats in front, 62-58.
Tanner Brooks hit a layup at 1:04 to cut it to 62-60, but Michael answered with two free throws with 44 seconds left as Frostburg pushed is lead back to four, 64-60.
On the ensuing St. Mary's possession, Brooks hit a three-pointer from the corner with 34 seconds left and converted two foul shots with five seconds left to seal the win. The Bobcats missed the first shot of a 1-and-1 with 14 seconds left and a potential game-tying three-pointer was off the mark as time expired.
Michael led the Bobcats with 16 points, eight rebounds, three assists and two steals. He was followed by Nick Smoot with 11 points behind three three-pointers, while sophomore Dalton Gaus had 10.
Frostburg rebounded from an early deficit in the first half to capture a six-point advantage, 27-21, with a jumper from Michael. The Bobcats carried a seven-point cushion in to halftime when Gaus swished a three-pointer with 1:08 to play for a 37-30 lead at the break.
In the second, Smoot hit a three and Michael made another layup as the Bobcats quickly led by 12, 42-30 less than two minutes into the frame.
A quick 7-0 scoring spurt for Frostburg handed it a 14-point lead, 49-35, its largest of the afternoon with 15:24 left in regulation. St. Mary's began to slowly chip away at the lead until the final horn.
Tanner Brooks led all players with 26 points on 8-of-13 shooting with four three-pointers. Delaszo Smith contributed 15 points, four assists and four steals for the Seahawks.
Frostburg travels to Southern Virginia this Wednesday at 8:00 pm.
