Strong First Half Lifts Men’s Lax Over Mount Union

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State men's lacrosse team outscored Mount Union 12-1 in the first half to lift the Bobcats over the Purple Raiders, 17-4, Sunday afternoon at Bobcat Stadium.
 
Sophomore midfielder Ethan Aikin posted four goals and four assists for a career-high eight points, while senior attackmen Spenser Love (3 goals, 1 assist) and Blake Grudzien (3g) both added hat tricks for the Bobcats (3-0).
 
Frostburg pounded away, firing double-digit shots in all four quarters to hold a 61-12 shot advantage and picked up 27 more ground balls than the Purple Raiders (1-1).
 
Senior midfielder Erik Geiser (12-of-13, 10 ground balls), sophomore midfielder Kyle Horak (6-of-7), and freshman midfielder Drew Mash (4-of-5) combined to win 88 percent of the face-offs for FSU.
 
Aikin had a hand in three of Frostburg's five first-quarter goals, scoring twice and assisting on a third as the Bobcats led 5-1 at the first intermission.
 
Love had the first quarter's final goal and opened the second quarter with two more to complete his hat trick, while goals from junior midfielder Chase Cullison, Aikin, and Grudzien surged FSU ahead, 12-1, at halftime.
 
Mount Union's Brent Greenberg slipped past the Bobcat defense three minutes into the third quarter, but Frostburg kept at it, adding marks from Grudzien, senior midfielder Tate Rolland (1g, 1a), and senior attack Nick Stailey (2g) to keep a healthy 15-2 lead heading into the final 15 minutes.
 
Senior midfielder Michael Kibler notched his second goal of the game just 2:20 into the final quarter, but Mount Union's Chris Daley sandwiched goals around a tally from junior attack Brendan Krivak, including a last-second goal, and the Bobcats walked away with a 17-4 win.
 
Daley led the Purple Raiders with two goals, while keepers Collin Peters (12 saves) and Jake Krone (5 saves) combined for 17 stops. Tim Galley also saw time in the cage for Mount Union.
 
Senior goalkeeper Tom Kraemer earned the win and picked up two saves, while senior keeper Taylor Schmitz added a save. Freshman goalie Tommy Rolando saw action in the final minutes for the Bobcats.
 
Frostburg returns to action on Wednesday, March 2 when it plays host to Messiah for a 7:00 pm face-off.
