ASHLAND, Va. – Senior Renay Aubel smacked a three-run home run and sophomore Allison Short struckout three in game one as Frostburg earned a split with Randolph-Macon that opened the 2016 season for both teams, Saturday.
The Bobcats took care of the opener 4-2 thanks to Aubel's three-run bomb in the sixth inning that helped Frostburg rally from a 2-1 deficit.
Sophomore Rae Harrison singled home senior Taylor Blevins in the second inning for the first run of the game and a quick 1-0 lead. The Yellow Jackets answered with single runs in the third and fifth innings for a 2-1 adge.
In the top of the sixth, sophomore Sam Gatton and junior Hannah Tavik walked before Aubel hit a home run over the left field fence for a 4-2 Bobcat lead and ultimately the win.
Short tossed all 7.0 innings in the circle for the Bobcats and fanned three, while allowing just four hits and two earned runs.
In the nightcap, Randolph-Macon jumped out to a 3-0 lead through three innings. Frostburg answered in the top of the fourth when Blevins homered to center field that narrowed the gap to 3-1.
The Yellow Jackets made the score 8-1 with five runs in the fifth behind a two-run double from Skylar Toth.
Harrison drove in the contest's final run in the sixth frame when she grounded out to second that plated Blevins.
Tavik suffered the loss after allowing three runs, none earned in 2.0 innings. Junior Carlie Lewis and freshman Ali Caulkins each struckout two batters in relief of Tavik.
Blevins finished the day 3-for-5 with three runs, a double and home run, while Aubel was 2-for-6 with a homer and three RBI.
FSU returns to action on Friday at the Beach Blast in Virginia Beach when it takes on Salem at 1:00 pm.
